I figured it out!

  1. Close the sidebar using the "Close Sidebar" button near the top left.
  2. Two new buttons will appear at the top center of the page, "Photos" and "Albums". Click on "Albums".
  3. Select the album you want to delete.
  4. Press the trash can button at the top right!

So the trash can that's specifically for deleting albums only appears when you're looking at your collection of albums on the main screen.

There's also another way to do this without closing the sidebar (I just found out).

  1. On the sidebar, the first item should be "Photos". Below it should be "Albums" (in smaller font). Click on "Albums".
  2. Now the main screen should display your albums. Select the one you want to delete.
  3. Trash it with the trash can button in the top right.

It's not exactly obvious, so I think they should add a trash can icon next to each album in the sidebar. *shrug

I suspect these ghost folders and albums are hang overs from the first import when turning on iCloud Photos Library. In my case they are folders and albums I deleted from my system Photos library just prior to turning on iCloud Photos Library. I hope they go away after 30 or 40 days. At the moment, that's all I can hope for since I see no other way to make them disappear.

I have exact issue, loads of empty ghost albums in iCloud photos, i have an open case that has been running with Apple Care now for 3 weeks, initially they got Apple engineering to reset my iCloud photos account and they all went including all photos. It was just like a brand new photos account.

So i was advise to sync it up again from my mac book pro, i left it running over night and the next day, low and behold they had all uploaded and mirrored my photos app on the laptop... But all the ghost albums where back too, I have about 650!!!! empty albums up there, some are even duplicates of each other.

EG: "March holiday" "March Holiday (1)" " March Holiday (3) " March Holiday (4)"

I speak with Apple care about every 3 days about this as its just annoying me now, they keep telling me that its in the hands of Apple engineering and there is a problem with certain Apple servers, this is all caused by the transition from iPhoto to photos.

Not really anything helpful i know but its kind of nice to know I'm not alone!

I have emailed this thread onto my support guy!

Mine look like this but as i said i have about 650!

My "ghost" folders disappeared. I went to iCloud.com and then to the deleted photos page. I downloaded the photos from there and imported them into Photos on my Mac. Then I deleted them on my Mac. Next on my Mac I went to Photos/File/Show Recently Deleted. There I selected the deleted photos and permanently deleted them. The next day all the "ghost" folders on Icloud.com were gone. Keep in mind, if you sort your photos into folders on your Mac, those folders do appear with gear icons on iCloud.com, and they are empty there. I look forward to the day that they sync to iCloud.com too.

Even though I manually deleted folders and pictures when i first started using the Photo app to ensure they were all in sync, since then I have additional folders that were deleted on laptop or device but will not delete on one device even though they deleted from iCloud. This is in addition to one folder that is still in iCloud but not on any device. I am SO glad that I am only doing this with a limited library based on my laptop and my devices and not doing anything with the main library on my mac mini. I have about 2,000 photos on my laptop and devices but about 100,000 images on my Mac mini and all the images on the laptop and devices are duplicated on the Mac Mini. I can always just delete everything from the laptop and Idevices and start over.

Very frustrating. Between the limited tool set to edit pics and the problems with sync, I have started to look at using Adobe Lightroom and Dropbox.

I can "upload" photos to this folder but they never appear, but they are using space as I have seen the size of my iCloud Photo Library has increased. I tried creating a new folder with the same name, but that created two folders on iCloud with the same name. Deleting the one that showed on the photo app only deleted the new one.

I disabled using iCloud. Of course it takes 30 days for things to actually delete. Hopefully the empty folders will actually disappear and not come back is I enable using iCloud.

I had many of the similar problems people here are talking about and decided to call Apple and after some long talks and a few days of waiting they called me to say that they will fix the problem manually with their engineering team since they need to rebuild my database for iCloud Photo Library because they also said that it did not pass the health test... But in order to do that they asked my permission to access my account only for this reason and I thought better to not give them permission and just wait 30 days after disabling iCloud Photo Library and it should be a new start after that period and like this my photo privacy will be protected by not allowing them to access my account... Now about 45 days has past and I started as new few days back. I have 2 MacBooks and 1 iPhone. My iCloud Photo Library size is 110 GB. It took about 2 days to upload this to iCloud from my main MacBook and it took another 2 days to download this amount of data to my other MacBook. The great thing is now all of these 3 devices are working flawlessly when it comes to sync. Since iPhone's memory is not enough to hold all of the 110 GB of data therefore I have Optimize iPhone Storage option enabled for this device but this causes me to wait for quite a long time if I want to play a video from my library. But this problem is mainly because Apple does not keep a lower resolution of the videos as it does the opposite for the photos for quick access through iPhone and I think it is a shame that their servers don't support this yet. Competitors such as Dropbox and Microsoft both have this service enabled by default and you always can play your videos from their cloud based services quickly and easily. The problems I talked till now I'm sure will be improved in time by Apple but there is a problem that still continues its existence and that's if I log in to my account through a web browser by going to www.icloud.com and then go to photos on the deleted section I still have about 1200 photos waiting to get deleted from 45 days ago. The days remaining says 0 day. These photos are there before I disabled the service and before the long wait I talked earlier within this post. I also still have some empty folders and in the actual photo section there are only 4 photos visible. Now this looks like a big problem and actually is but since all of my devices are getting synced perfectly the problem kind of loses its importance somehow. I called Apple again on Sunday and they said that their support tools are in maintenance and plus I should wait 1 more week since I had 110 GB so it takes time for the changes to reflect on icloud.com website. Although I told them that my data is actually in their servers successfully and is getting synced perfectly but they said it is better to wait and if not corrected in 1 week to call them back...
