Yosemite 10.10.3 Wifi/Bluetooth Issue FIX

As with many frustrated users of Yosemite, I too have been dealing with Wifi and Bluetooth issues since upgrading to Yosemite. Heck, I even downgraded back to Mavericks back in January when my shiny new Magic Mouse would no longer work unless I switched off the Wifi. The heck! With the recent release of 10.10.3, I figured I'd give Yosemite another try. After a few days of what seemed like a solid OS, the dreaded bluetooth/wifi issues presented themselves once again. How can this be? I was bummed, because I really wanted to update my studio's Mac minis to Yosemite. BUT, it doesn't end there. Today, I decided to pursue this issue. Starting fresh, I erased an internal SSD and installed a clean copy of Yosemite 10.10.3. No issues with bluetooth or wifi at this point. Okay, cool. Next, I began to install some apps from the App store. All was well until I installed the latest Adobe Cloud app and then restarted the mini. Mouse issues immediately began. Now we're onto something! Sure acted like a bluetooth/wifi interference issue. It's got to be some sort of broken software between Adobe and Apple here. Next, I started in Safe mode and repaired the permissions, twice. Problem has not returned since...

Is this strictly an Adobe Cloud / Yosemite conflict? I don't know.

Hopefully this is able to help someone else who may be experiencing similar symptoms.

Cheers.

This didn't work for me specifically - but after a solid 6 hours of fiddling, and literally following EVERYONE's hunches - fixing it was very simple: Go into preferences for facetime and turn the new features in Yosemite off - the cell stuff, the integration with email accounts, ALL OF IT. Then, simply turn off wi-fi and turn it back on again - all network problems gone. There are others offering a similar solution at the protocol level, but I couldn't find the suggestion.

No wonder Apple's not saying anything. Making your iPhone ring on your mac screen was a BIG DEAL - except your iPhone and Mac have to be on the same wi-fi for a reason: so they can flood the crap out of it.

Everyone please try this and report back. I'm astonished that I spent so long troubleshooting - of course just disabling key new features would work! I'm running a late 13 MBP Retina on 10.10.3 - I'd held off upgrading to Yosemite until today - it has fixed other issues, but what a waste of a Friday!!!!

EDIT: Specifically, I disabled facetime and ALL options, re-enabled and got both my speed and reliability back. The interesting thing is that through trial and error, I found that it is probably the iCloud integration in Facetime. The good news is, I cannot reproduce the failure. Once it's fixed, you can apparently turn everything back on without issue.

"Yosemite WiFi Issues Fix

This issue with D2D/AWDL is the same root cause of the severe WiFi performance degradation affecting users on Yosemite (continues on 10.10.1). Although AirDrop was introduced in OSX Lion and used AWDL, with the release of iOS 8, perhaps there’s more sharing or just some bad new code. AirDrop and AWDL have been active since iOS 7, yet the issue seems to have suddenly appeared in iOS 8.

@rpetrich mentioned AirDrop used to be two incompatible, but identically named protocols until Yosemite/iOS 8. Perhaps this and the changes for continuity introduced bugs in this area.

Turning off AWDL

Perhaps not surprising for Apple users, you actually can’t easily (see below) turn off AWDL/AirDrop in Yosemite. You can remove it from the left side of Finder, but that doesn’t fix the issue. Apple? User choice?

Either way, you can fix your Yosemite WiFi issues, at the cost of disabling AWDL and AirDrop, by typing the following command at the OSX terminal:

sudo ifconfig awdl0 down

And vice versa to restore AirDrop and AWDL (and the WiFi issues)

sudo ifconfig awdl0 up

For clarification: that’s “a w d (lowercase L) (number zero)”

Update: Older Mac’s/MacBooks may not have this interface on Yosemite due to hardware incompatibilities. Based on http://recode.net/2014/10/16/os-x-yosemite-arrives-what-does-it-mean-for-older-m acs/, looks like they don’t have full AirDrop and probably don’t support AWDL."

Yes, it worked for me too, so far! At first I didn't think it worked as all I turned off was the cell phone calling feature, but one day later I went and turned off ALL of the new Continuity features, I cannot street how important this is ALL OF THEM. Including handoff, SMS messaging from Messages, etc. And voila, it works now! Thank you all so much!

One thing that amazes me is how little Apple cares. I fought with WiFi when I bought it in 2013, and listened to Apple Support tell me to have my university change all of our routers to Apples ones (no, really, he did). And now, May of 2015, I again cannot go more than 5 minutes without having to disconnect and reconnect to get WiFi back. And now that my support has run out, they want me to pay them to tell me how their problem is my problem. Sorry for the venting, just very, very frustrated. And I just did it again so I could hit 'reply'.

I switched off everything on FaceTime and the problem was semi solved. I was able to tap onto the Wifi but it still took time before I could get Internet connectivity.

I read elsewhere about how iCloud seemed to be a problem for some users so I pretty much switched it off but only left one feature running i.e. Find My Mac and Keychain. For now life seems good with a stable internet connection. *Fingers crossed. Eyes crossed. Toes and fingers crossed too*
