Clicking on the red dot actually quit my apps

hello everyone

I'm fairly new to the mac (one month) . (I'm on Yosemite MBP retina 13 mid 2014)

whenever I close an app by clicking the red dot it close the window, I understand this is how mac works, and i like it like that.

but i've noticed today that when I'm on safari and i click the red dot, it closes the window, there is still that little dot below the app on the dock to show me that the app didn't quit, but when I click on the app to open it, it show my favorite tab, so all of my tabs are gone/ i tried with chrome, same thing/ the app store same thing.

It basically close the window and when I open it, it starts fresh, it wasn't doing that. it used to open my apps as I left them off.

Please help me, I read countless of forums and all without the solution

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

If, you open an app calendar and press the red dot only the window is closed and the application remains opened .

The calendar application is still in the dock having a white dot beneath it .

To close the calendar application , either right click on it & quit or take your cursor on the top menu bar > click on calendar and quit .

But , if you close the safari , it will be started as fresh but the applications are running in the background , so the right method is close all applications before quitting the safari .

The red "quits" app : the little dot at the bottom on the app in the dock is there when I click the red

What do mean with: the little dot at the bottom on the app in the dock is there when I click the red, . . . ?

When I quite Safari ( + Q or click on the red button) Safari wil closed.

To open Safari again, I do have to click on Safari icon from the dock.

OK, according to your last screenshot when you open Safari again , Safari open the Favorites.

Like I say earlier Uncheck Show favorites.

After uncheck Show favorites >> Close Safari ( + Q)

Then open Safari again >> click on Safari icon from the Dock.

Have you set a Home page?

Here Show favorites is unchecked and I set up a home page.

Safari will always open with the home page.

Tried everything you said, its not working, I have a homepage, its the apple one

On safari or all the others apps

I think I'll give up, this is driving me crazy, the red cross quits apps, it used to just close windows and put me back where I was. I'll just use the orange until apple comes out with an update or something

I even want to reset the mac
