Aperture Not Working After Updating to OS 10.10.3

I have updated to the latest version of the OS and my legitimate copy of Aperture has been inoperable since the update. Apple has sent an email to everyone with a registered copy of Aperture stating that it still will work after the update but that is not the case. I feel lied to and I have about 200,000 photos across 7 Aperture libraries and this new "Photos" app lacks the professional tools that I need. I was going to transition to other options but I didn't feel the need to right away since they said it would be fine.

Is there some update patch I am missing? I would like to think they didn't abandon the few of us that use it and love the program for what it was. (See images below.)

What is your current Aperture version?

Shortly before the Mac OS X 10.10.3 update, Apple released the compatibility update to Aperture 3.6., that you need to install.

If your current Aperture version is Aperture 3.5.1,Aperture should be showing at the AppStore on your Purchases tab. If you are seeing Aperture there, move your crossed out Aperture application from the Applications folder to the Trash (but do not empty the Trash).

Then try to download and install Aperture from the Purchases tab of the AppStore.

If I follow the steps you've posted above will it still keep all of my files or will I lose all of my pictures

Your image files are in the Aperture Library. They will not be deleted by trashing the Aperture application from the Applications folder - just don't delete the Aperture Library from your Pictures folder. Don't empty the Trash. But it is good practice to make a current backup copy of the Aperture library before you try to update the application, just in case. It occasionally can happen, that the Mac crashes and then the update of the Aperture library can get stuck and be left corrupted.

If all fails, you can open your Aperture library in the new Photos application and access your photos this way, but Photos is not as versatile as Aperture.

It might be assumed in your detailed explanation that one must be already running OS 10.10 for App Store "purchase" to offer up v3.6 update.

I followed your instructions completely, but am still on OS 10.9.5, the end result was that "purchase" only offered me to download an earlier version.

Is v3.6 not compatible with 10.9.5?

Does it indeed require that I, as the first step, upgrade to Yosemite?

So I'm have a variation of this Aperture issue. Like many I didn't update to Yosemite and stayed with Mavericks as long as I thought possible and kept my Aperture current 3.5.x. With the pending release of El Capitan, I made the move to OSX 10.10.x and of course lost the use of Aperture. No big deal, I'd backed everything up and resigned to the regretable loss of Aperture. What I didn't count on was the App store creating a "update loop" as it were. Launchpad shows a perpetual but pause update state with Aperture.

I've deleted any and all files folders and hopefully references to the application but Launchpad is still showing Aperture as being updated but with the processed pause (see the screen capture of launchpad).

I'm figuring its some .plist that needs to be purged but what and where . . . is the question. Ideas?

Have you tried to hold down on the Aperture icon on the Launch Pad until all icons start to wiggle, and then to remove it there by clicking the "x" in the upper left corner?

If you are seeing the update message, you should be able to update aperture by reinstalling from the purchases history, after you delete aperture from the LaunchPad.

I have Mac OS X 10.10.5.

My Aperture version is 2.1.4 and I do not know how to access or convert my images into something I can use anymore.

The library contains holiday picture for the last 10 years. It would be great to see them again. I do have backups, but that does not help

very much.

There is no app called Aperture that I can download or get working?

Also the iPhoto application, when I tried it, tells me the Aperture Library must be upgraded.

When I try that by selecting the "upgrade Aperture" button, Appstore tells me that "the object is not availble

in the shop". This also terminates the iPhoto. So I can not use iPhoto neither.

I tried some advices here (throw the Aperture in thrash etc.) But that does not help.

How can I access my Aperture photo library?

I can buy the relevant tool, if I only knew what to use?

The only version of Aperture that is running on MacOS X 10.10.3 or later is Aperture 3.6. But there is no longer a way to purchase this Aperture version, if you do not already own an Aperture 3 version from the AppStore.

Have you tried to open a copy of your Aperture library in the new Photos.app? This help page claims that Photos can open any version of an Aperture library: Get started with Photos for OS X - Apple Support

Photos can use libraries from iPhoto 8.0 or later and any version of Aperture. If you’d like to migrate a library from iPhoto 7 or earlier, use Apple’s free iPhoto Library Upgrader tool to prepare your library first.

Photos is not a replacement for Aperture, but you can browse your library, do simple edits and annotations, and export the photos to migrate them to a more versatile asset management system like Lightroom or Capture One.

To open your Aperture library in Photos drag it onto the Photos icon in the Dock.

If Photos cannot open your Aperture 2 library, contact Apple Support and ask for redeem code to be able to upgrade to Aperture 3.6.

Thank you for these posts!! I moved the crossed out aperture to the trash and downloaded the new version. I opened it up and am so thankful my images are still there. What do I do with the crossed out aperture in the trash now? I tried to move it back, but it only gave the option to replace with the older version or keep both. I am concerned about losing my images. Do I now delete the old aperture from the trash OR move it back keeping both?
