Videos insterted into Keynote Lost linkage when Relaunch Program

ARGH. I just had this happen again using Keynote 7.0.5 under Mac OS X 10.12.3. I opened a keynote file, and "some external movies are missing because they are no longer available" and all my linked movies are gone.

Console.log shows these sorts of errors:

This is not good.

This happens when video is and the original files are moved or deleted.

1 - Keynote Preferences > General > select the option to Copy Audio and Movies into project

2 - Start a new presentation and add the video files into the project again

Actually, if any attribute of the file is changed – the link will be lost: name, version, location, etc.

I embed videos into Keynote almost daily – and never have issues unless I'm in a hurry and forget to re-import a revised edit.

Video playback in Keynote is much more predictable than any other presentation software on the market.

Want foolproof? Embed the video directly into Keynote – or create a single folder for your presentation that contains everything, and move that to your playback computer – or store on iCloud.

I have the same problem. Previously as long as the filename was not changed the program would find the movies or ask you to find them and reinstate the link.

I had the movies in a folder in the same folder as the presentation but they still were not found.

It is crazy to have to keep the movies in the exact same location. I build presentations from material I have used before, so I have a folder of movies going back several years which I insert in new presentations. I don't want to have to make copies for each presentation. It all worked fine before, even when I did spring cleaning and moved things about.

A big presentation used to be very slow to save if all the movies were embedded. And it makes a very big file.

However, the new interface is very nice.

Actually, I am unable to replicate your issue here on Mac OS 10.10.3 and Keynote 5.5.3 (2151).

Just tried un-embedded files with links to external video and media files and they all played back perfectly. Even after quitting Keynote and re-booting – there was no issue playing back media that was not imported and embedded.

You might want to repair disk permissions, or perhaps – delete and re-download your version of Keynote, in case there is a program fault.

I have the same problem with Keynote 6.2 (1861) on Yosemite 10.10.2. I did not move or touch the linked video files. When I close and reopen my Keynote, I see the error message: "Some external movies are missing because they are no longer available."

When I try to drag one of those source video files from the Desktop into the Keynote slide where its proxy still image still appears, I get the error "The move ___ couldn't be inserted."

Even when I use Keynote to save a working version to a zip, then open the zip copy, I get the same error.

I have the same problem with Keynote 6.2 (1861) on Yosemite 10.10.2.

Keynote 6.2 is incompatible with Yosemite. Confirm you are using Yosemite; (Apple Menu > About This Mac) and update to Keynote version 6.5.3

To prevent issues with linking to media files:

1 - Keynote Preferences > General > select the option to Copy Audio and Movies into project

2 - delete the movies from slides that do not play

3 - add the movies on to the slides again

Or only those that I tried to link in Keynote 6.2 under Yosemite?

What about videos linked under Keynote 6.2 under Mavericks?

Your manual solution would be a prohibitive amount of work since I have O(1000) linked videos on O(100) Keynote files.

I hope Keynote 6.5.3 will automatically re-find external linked video files if they have not been moved in the directory tree...

If not, how can I automatically re-link video files?

To relink to a QuickTime file: Inspector > Animate > Movie and click the replace button which will bring up the folder where the file is located.

I have the same problem with Keynote 6.5.3 on OS X 10.10.5.

When I reopen a keynote file I get the message "Some external movies are missing [...]" but I have not touched the movie files. In fact, all I have done is close the keynote file and opned it again, within seconds.

If I try to import or replace the "missing" movie files I get the message "The movie <X> could not be inserted".

I have many presentations and embeding video takes up a lot of space, so I do not want to embed the video files.

The videos are sotred in H264 encoded .mov files.

Is this a bug?

This can happen when the original video file is renamed, moved or deleted, when doing this, the hyperlink is incorrect and won't action.

I am NOT renaming, moving or deleting my video files. That is the whole point.

Anyway. I tried to move the Keynote app out form the Applications folder and now video links are suddenly preserved like they should. Can anyone explain to me why that is?

Moving the application deleted the Keynotes preference settings, good to hear that worked and hope it continues to do so.

Best to move Keynote back to applications as it will cause other problems later on if left outside of its natural home, Mac Applications are designed to be installed and used from the Applications folder.

I have the same problem. I didn't move Keynote, didn't move the files. But when I open my project I get "Some external movies are missing because they're not longer available".

It is really annoying because it happend already a few times just before a actually had to give that presentation.

It really seems a bug, because I didn't change my way of working with Keynote the last years and now suddenly I get these problems. I don't like to embed media, because I make presentations in multiple languages.

Another problem is that a lot of time it just refuses to save the file. The only way to get around is to duplicate (how annoying Apple to remove 'save as') the presentation.

I got almost so frustrated that I was thinking moving back to Powerpoint.
