How can I rename photos in new Photos app?

I recently 'updated' to Photos from iPhoto. Now I can't see how to rename groups of my pictures. E.g. when I import from qmycamera, I could select some of the imported photos and give them a common name and sequential numbering, then do the dame for another selection of photos, giving them a different name with sequential numbering. In iPhoto, I could use the "rename photos" function in the menubar Photos dropdown menu where I had options to change various things including rename with text and sequential numbering for selected groups of photos. I can't find this function anywhere in the new Photos application on Yosemite.

Can anyone steer me to the menus that do this? I can't find the info anywhere in any Photos material, even online forums etc.

In addition, there is no menubar along the top panel of the Photos pane. It's just a flat grey panel.

Many thanks in advance for any help offered.

So after reading all the comments, I can see the confusion and have the answer now. People want different outcomes, and yes adding a title or comment or tag will help organise the photos within the App. But if you want to send a photo and say upload it somewhere which requires unique filenames, then the only process is to export the photos. The reason for this is they reside in a database and are not in a standard folder/filename format.

  • Select the one or multiple photos within the Photo App, right-click > Get Info
  • Add a title name
  • Hit File > Export

Select 'Use Title' as file name:

    • Select 'Documents' or other destination folder

You will now be able to browse the photos via the Finder and edit the filenames again if needed.

Thank you but I'm still not clear. When in iPhoto I could select all the pictures in an event, go to a drop down menu and select either to add a name or a description and all of the selected photos. Voila, they all have the same name or description. Now however it seems you can only do the same to one picture at a time. This becomes laborious with so many pictures.

iPhoto gave you this ability:

  1. Select ‘Batch Change’ from the Photos menu.
  2. In the Batch Change sheet that drops down, select ‘Title’ from the Set dropdown menu, and ‘Text’ from the To dropdown menu.
  3. A text field will display. Enter the text you want to use as the title for all of the images you selected earlier, for example, ‘Trip to Yosemite.’
  4. Place a check mark in the ‘Append a number to each photo’ box. This will append a number to the title of each selected image, such as ‘Trip to Yosemite - 1.’

Click the ‘OK’ button to start the batch change process.

The batch change feature in iPhoto is a handy way to quickly change the titles of a group of related images.

I don't think Photos does Events like iPhoto.

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear. It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue. Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

Albums and smart albums can be sorted by Title, by Date with oldest first and by Date with newest first.

I guess I am confused as well, I searched this question because I too could not figure out how to change a photo file name. To the person who said you have never have been able to do this I must disagree. I have changed many of my photo file names from the string of numbers in the original camera file name to for example "Wrestling meet 1.jpg" "Wrestling meet 2.jpg" and so on. I have done this to almost all my photos, giving them a more meaningful name. I am going through photos right now and I had a bunch that I had not renamed yet but I could not find a way to rename it. Usually I would right click and either click on rename or I could just highlight the old name and type over it. I can't seem to find a way to do that. Now it only allows me to "add a title" I know that this is not what I did before as when I was renaming files if I would rename a photo in the file as I regularly do with a 1, 2, 3, to distinguish one from another if I made a mistake and duplicated the name it would tell me there is already a file by that name do I want to replace it. which then I knew I needed to change the number on the name. So with that said, I WAS able to rename photo files and now with the Apple Photos program I don't see how to do that. So that would be my question, How do I rename a photo file with Apple Photos?

No - and yes you are confused

With iPhoto or Photos is it not possible to ever change the file name - if you did the program would not be able to find that photo

You can change the description or the title or other metadata but you can not change the file name except by exporting with the new file name - while the photo is in Photos the original can not be modified in any way

I guess I must have changed the file names outside of the apple photo apps... Because my photos files have definitely been renamed. Too bad, I like giving my photos unique names. I probably renamed them from my external storage before I uploaded them to Photos. I guess unless I want to do a lot of extra work, they are stuck having nondescript names. I take it the titles are only useful on the Photos App and won't help me if I transfer the file to a flash drive to give to someone. Hence why I like renaming files.
