How can I rename photos in new Photos app?

I recently 'updated' to Photos from iPhoto. Now I can't see how to rename groups of my pictures. E.g. when I import from qmycamera, I could select some of the imported photos and give them a common name and sequential numbering, then do the dame for another selection of photos, giving them a different name with sequential numbering. In iPhoto, I could use the "rename photos" function in the menubar Photos dropdown menu where I had options to change various things including rename with text and sequential numbering for selected groups of photos. I can't find this function anywhere in the new Photos application on Yosemite.

Can anyone steer me to the menus that do this? I can't find the info anywhere in any Photos material, even online forums etc.

In addition, there is no menubar along the top panel of the Photos pane. It's just a flat grey panel.

Many thanks in advance for any help offered.

I take it the titles are only useful on the Photos App and won't help me if I transfer the file to a flash drive to give to someone. Hence why I like renaming files.

If you assign titles to the photos in the Info panel of the photo, you can use the titles as the file names, when you use "File > Export", as Larry said. Just set the file naming preset to "Use Title" when exporting.

That is what I used to do but with my current version of Photo when you go to "get info" it does not allow you to alter the name of the photo only add a title. I was glad to see the post that you can opt to use the "title" when exporting. That will be helpful. I guess I was just used to changing the file name which doesn't seem to be possible anymore with Photos... unless I have some setting messed up which is preventing this action. Have a great Holiday.

Thanks léonie this is good to know. I was so focused on changing the file name I did not notice this. I would still prefer to be able to change the file name as I did in the past but this will help. Thanks and have great Holiday.

You will have to do that outside of Photos as you did before in iPhoto because neither allowed you to change the actual file name. They both only allow you to change what you call the photo. Title and Name are the same field in the respective programs. iPhoto never changed the actual file name.

It is completely not obvious, but one way to do this (as of writing):

  • select Window > Info (cmd-i) or right click and select "Get Info" from the context menu
  • select all of the items you want to change, noticing how the Info panel now says 'Various Titles'
  • Change the Title, Description, or Keywords and they are applied to all photos

Hope this helps!

At the time of writing, setting titles sequentially would require an Applescript such as:

Batch Changing in Photos, Tweaks to other Scripts

There ARE some built in features that do similar:

Apply the same name to multiple items:

  • Select Window > Info (cmd-i) or right click and select "Get Info" from the context menu
  • Select all of the items you want to change, noticing how the Info panel now says 'Various Titles'
  • Change the Title, Description, or Keywords and they are applied to all photos.

orExport photos to files with sequential numbering:

  • Select all of the items you want to change
  • File > Export > Export Unmodified Original for [N] Items

Not exactly what you asked for, but hope it helps!
