Can I add an SSD to my iMac without removing my existing hard drive?

Hi, I have a mid-2011 iMac, and it's time for the SSD upgrade. My question is, can I still keep my existing disc based hard drive and a new SSD? Also, does my optical drive need to be removed, or can it stay inside the computer? Also, what is the best guide for how to install the SSD?

Thank you for your help.

1. which external optical enclosure did you get?

I found one sold via NewEgg.com

2. did you get the thermal sensor for the SSD?

I removed the existing thermal sensor from the DVD and attached it to the SSD.

Keep in mind that my system was a Late 2009 27" iMac. The constructions of the 2011 iMac and the thermal sensor may be different. If you are getting a DataDoubler kit from MacSales.com (OWC) I'm sure they can tell you want you will need.
