How do I revert back to Aperture from Photos?

I opened up my Aperture library in Photos since I was under the impression that it was replacing iPhoto and Aperture, but was disappointed to find a large number of Aperture editing features missing. I suppose this means I need to find a replacement like Adobe Lightroom, but I was hoping to go back to Aperture while I researched alternatives. When I opened Aperture back up my library was empty. I know it's on my computer somewhere, so I'm not panicking, but what are the steps to get your old Aperture library out of Photos and back into Aperture? Thanks!

Photos opens up and there doesn't seem to be a way to correct it. I even unchecked the Phitis preference pane for Photos NOT to automatically open! I appear to be FAR FROM THEONLY PERSON WITH THIS PROBLEM! My rant may not help, but it sure makes me feel better. User error? Not. Any suggestions??

You have to disable Photos to open for each of your cards, because each card is seen as a different device.

There is a setting in Image Capture to enable to specify which app should open.

  • Try again - insert your card and launch Image Capture. Select the card in sidebar.
  • Click the tiny disclosure triangle in the lower left corner of the window. Now you should be seeing something like this:
    User uploaded file
  • Select Aperture for "Connecting this .. opens". And select "Import to" Aperture, if you want auto import.

Thanks for the input Walther. I used to use Photoshop in the '90s and just settled for the old software for many years because of the high price. Last year I decided to buy Aperture and while it doesn't offer all of the tools of Photoshop, I've been very pleased with it. I've considered buying Lightroom when Apple announced the end of Aperture development, after hearing many positive things. I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I've a question about Lightroom; does Lightroom automatically duplicate the raw image for edit so you don't accidentally make a permanent change to a raw image? Not a big deal, it's easy for me to remember to duplicate the raw files, but I'm just curious. I always liked that feature in Aperture.

Adobe Lightroom is not expensive. And yes, Lightroom has a non-destructive way of working with your photo images. It leaves your original files as it is an you can always revert tot the original state. Furthermore, this is done completely automatic. You do not need to remember to duplicate a file before changing it. This is great. This is exactly the way Aperture works. There is only one important difference. Lightroom does not put your original files into its protected folder that you cannot reach anymore. Lightroom leaves the folder structure you make intact. This means you must have the discipline to leave it as it is, otherwise Lightroom gets confused and cannot find your original files anymore.
