2560x1600 via HDMI? Dell U3011 monitor.

Connected my new Macbook 12 Retina to my Dell U3011 (30" 2560x1600 native) via the Apple USB-C Digital AV adapter and HDMI. The max resolution I can set is 1920x1200. On the display settings page on my Macbook, it's set to 60hz and there's no option to lower it to 30hz. Any ideas?

Figured it out! I am successfully using Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter with HDMI cable to Dell U3011.

The problem appears to be that the monitor has a faulty EDID over HDMI. It reports its native resolution to be 1900x1200 instead of 2560x1600. However, using SwitchResX, we can force the output to be full resolution.

  • Install SwitchResX (follow directions for disabling System Integrity Protection). I used the trial version to test it out.
  • Choose "DELL U3011 (2)" on the left-hand list.
  • Choose Custom Resolutions tab.
  • Add the following resolution: Choose "Custom resolution" in dropdown. Check "Use simplified settings". Select "CVT-RB". Set "Active": 2560 pixels x 1600 lines. Set "Scan rate": 60 Hz.
  • Click OK, then Cmd-S to save.
  • Reboot, then go to the "Current Resolutions" tab of SwitchResX, and choose the "2560x1600 , 60Hz (NTSC)" option.

I'd like to know which HDMI to DVI he used as well. I had an old HDMI-DVI cable and tried it but my Dell 3008WFP is just blank. The Macbook sees it--it shows the proper resolution options, but the monitor doesn't show anything. I'm going to oder a new cable just to see if maybe my cable is bad but I'd love to know which one commasign used successfully.

I used one from Amazon, but noticed that in the macOS beta, it no longer worked. Support said that it outputting 2560x1600 over an HDMI to single link DVI was actually a bug to begin with (which explained the occasional flickering). There seem to be a decent amount of USB-C to Display Port adapters, but none that could also charge the Macbook while using DP. My u3011 is current shelved until something that supports Display Port and charging comes out. Switched to an LG 4k USB-C monitor that connects and charges using the USB-C port.

The solution mentioned in this thread may be limited to only a few monitors. I can confirm that on a U3011, the USB-C to HDMI and an Amazon basics HDMI to Single Link DVI will push the full 2560 x 1600.

Apparently Dell U2711, U3011, and Philips 288P6 support single link 2560 x 1600 @ 340mhz instead of dual link @ 160mhz

I have tried the 4k hdmi to display port active adapter by gofanco from Amazon with the Apple USB-C HDMI adapter and the results were pretty terrible.

Hopefully this shouldn't be a problem now as most new monitors should handle hi res over HDMI.

Beautiful option, never realized that DVI will be more compatible than a HDMI.

In my case the full resolution was supported - 2560 x 1600. However the screen was bleeding out of the monitor display limits. So things like status bar, task bar etc was not visible to me. This was HDMI to HDMI.

When I got a HDMI to DVI, things worked like a charm. Thanks a lot for this.
