Netflix Won't Stream Via AirPlay on Apple TV

I just got off a chat with Netflix because the Netflix app on my iPhone would not stream video to the Apple TV via Peer to Peer Airplay.

I have an iPhone 5S, and a recently purchased Apple TV, all software is current on both.

I launch the Netflix app on my iPhone and start streaming a movie all via LTE. Then I touch the AppleTV logo on the bottom right, select my Apple TV from the menu, the iPhone shows me that the video is now being sent to my TV, the Apple TV gets the spinning circle as if it's loading, then both the iPhone and Apple TV display an error message that "an error occurred loading this content. cannot play movie. Try again later."

Netflix told me that their app should support AirPlay from the phone to the ATV and that the problem I'm experiencing is an Apple TV problem. Before I try to contact Apple, I thought I would see if anyone else is having this problem and perhaps solved it.

I can stream other content from my iPhone directly to the AppleTV via peer-to-peer AirPlay, including videos downloaded from iTunes. But I don't see any settings that I could change either on the iPhone or the Apple TV which might be causing this problem with Netflix.

I've downloaded a show and when I try to mirror fro my iPhone only the sound comes out of the ATV but not the video.

When I try to hand it off I get error (30103).

There doesn't seem to be a way around it :(

I believe the problem here is that when you AirPlay something from your iOS device, you're actually handing off the Internet duties to the AppleTV. In the case of Netflix, when you AirPlay, the iPhone hands over a URL (among other details) for the AppleTV to use to access the video directly (most likely using HTTP Live Streaming?). Since your AppleTV itself does not have an internet connection, it won't be able to load the movie from Netflix. "Mirroring" the iOS device would probably work, but that isn't ideal for movie watching.

Bottom line: the AppleTV itself needs Internet access in order to be able to load HTTP Live Streaming feeds.

I have this exact same issue. Actually, sometimes it works great and I can stream an entire episode from Netflix to ATV using peer to peer and my phone's LTE connection. Then, the very next episode fails over and over again. Then, I switch back to the previous episode I just watched successfully and it works fine again. To me, this is definitely a Netflix issue.

I'm glad to hear that it seems like an internet connection issue instead of some sort of licensing issue. Last night I was trying to watch an episode of Cosmos, but it wouldn't play on my appleTV- either through the Netflix app or streaming from an iPad. However, I could watch it fine on the iPad. I switched to an episode of Archer and had no problems at all.

My AppleTV has a wired connection, so it's unusual for it not to connect well, but I have noticed more connection issues lately. Perhaps it's time to check my cables.

TO all on this thread concerning not being able to mirror Netflix on an Apple TV from another iOS device:

it seems that if your ATV has Netflix installed on it, you cannot mirror it from your iOS device. Same goes for HBO Now (or Go) or Hulu, YouTube etc. Interestingly, I discovered this by mirroring SyFy, ABC,CBS etc easily. Bloomberg, nope, can't mirror....

my guess, tho I can't do it presently, is to either delete the app on the ATV or cable your device directly. I have a 3rd Gen ATV, so I'm sure I cannot delete these apps, but when I am able, I'll see if I can 'hide' them back into iTunes.

ITs it's a shame Apple doesn't own up to this, maybe they're testing us....
