I held the home power and volume up button for 30 plus seconds which booted into the diagnostics menu then exited out and restarted which seemed to have worked.

Thanks, but yes, I have done that. Twice actually. Roughly 6 months apart. My phone is no longer under warranty so I'm thinking I need to bite the bullet and upgrade.
