After the Apple Watch 1.0.1 Update, Heart Rate stopped working...

After I updated my Watch to 1.0.1, the heart rate monitor no longer monitors my heart rate in the background. It only monitors my heart rate when I ask it to take a reading.

This is really, really annoying. Has anyone else experienced this? It was working perfectly before the update.

I just got a call from Tim Cook's office. Needless to say they are now investigating the issue and are looking to fix it.

This might be the best (and coolest) news I've received all day! I'm glad to hear that our opinions are recognized and do get validated through Apple. That's why I love this company!

Hopefully an update gets released relatively soon!

I was quite happy to tell them about this thread and how there are at least a hundred people on this thread alone talking about it.

My watch is still better than it was, but it has gone back to being less reliable than it was. My biggest gap so far is 60-90 minutes.

The behavior is more consistent now with what others report on there. It is *more* accurate when I am not moving, and will not monitor AT ALL while moving unless the glance or exercise app is running.

From a strictly technical perspective it seems as if they adjusted the scheduled task which would run the heart rate monitor checker. Because when the glance or exercise app is up it is flawless. It just won't turn on as advertised periodically anymore.

To me it seems they adjusted how it looks for idle activity to see if it has spare cycles to check for a background heart rate, and they have now made it too sensitive and it thinks its always too busy if you are doing anything.

I am at the Genius Bar now having them look at this and in their standard diagnostics discovered the Health app on my iPhone is constantly crashing. So maybe something to do with the Health app (or how it works with 1.0.1). He's having me unpair and re-pair and recommendEd doing a restore of my iPhone software to hopefully resolve any issues with Health app.

This is great news! Hopefully a fix will be out soon.

In other news, now my stand circle advances even when I've been sitting for over an hour. It advanced while I sat at a funeral for over an hour today and again when I sat at lunch for over an hour. Before it seemed to take too long to record that I stood and now it records that I stood even when I didn't!

A new problem to resolve.

I got my replacement watch today, and I did a short, not-too-fast walk on my treadmill. I'm still seeing spurious numbers, such as these:

Since I was having these problems before the 1.0.1 update, I can only assume that it's a combination of hardware and software causing the issues. I've written a bit about it here:

I did notice, however, that it was taking readings every ten minutes from when I first set it up and put it on. All of the above are manual readings.
