When I receive calls the missed calls show on my wife's iphone. We both use Iphone 5S's and we use the same apple ID for icloud and purchases. But of course the numbers are different. Also the phones are on 2 different phone accounts.
Why are these two phones sharing the call log?

Go into Settings>FaceTime>iPhone Cellular Calls>OFF. You will want to do it on both devices. You can share an Apple ID for purchases, but as KiltedTim points out, t can be difficult sharing the iCloud ID. It takes a lot of maintenance to do that with multiple devices.
Would you prefer it if you could both use the drive as and when you wanted to?
There is no toggle for call history.
also familysharing says it will allow 5 additional family member, how is that a solution when more than 5 members are required?

Incorrect, you can have 6 members on Family Share
Family sharing will solve your problem. Perhaps you should investigate and learn how it really works instead of making wild assumptions.
