I have lost all my photos when updated to OS X Yosemite. Can somebody help please?

These are the details of my computer: I have recently updated (1st time ever) to OS X Yosemite. I did not back up any of my stuff and now have lost all of my photos. iPhoto does not exist anymore and I cannot seem to find it on the app store to update (I think it already came installed on the mac) Please could somebody help me get back my photos? There is over 4 years missing. Thanks in advance for all your help. User uploaded file

Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk permissions and the disk. Reboot normally and try to open the Pictures folder.

If you can't click on the Pictures folder and bring up its Info window:

User uploaded file

If you don't have Read & Write access click on the padlock, enter your Admin password and change your Privilege to Read & Write.

Yeah, that's where you enter your password. You won't see any visual feedback (no asterisks or anything), but just hit Enter when you're done, and it'll accept your password (assuming you typed it correctly).

sudo - temporarily escalate to administrator (root) privileges for this one command

chown - change ownership of the following directory

-R - change ownership of all the folders and files within the directory

jenniemccann - which user to change ownership to

~/Pictures - which directory to change ownership of

Because sudo is escalating your privileges, it needs your password to proceed (at least the first time).

Try the following procedure to reset the user privileges on your home folder by booting into the Recovery volume:

1. Restart holding down the Command and R keys.

2. You’ll be at the Repair Utilities screen. Click the Utilities item in the Menu Bar, then click Terminal.

3. In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.

4. The password reset utility window launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the dropdown below it, select the user account where you’re having issues.

5. At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the Reset button there.

The process takes a few minutes. When it’s completed, restart.

Just wanted to say thank you for all your help with my iPhoto issues. In the end i booked an appointment at the apple shop genius bar and they sorted it out for me. It was the fact that I did not have access to my photos. But all fixed now. Thank you soon much for spending the time to try and help me though. It is very much appreciated! JEN
