Well all I can say is after getting the new version of iMovie, 1080p is now supported. I am using the old iDVD to make 1080p DVD's of 1.5 hours on std disks. I just made a bunch yesterday.
The reason this can be done is QT conversion is divide by 15 and iDVD compression is divide by 2. Get imovie 10.0.8 it's amazing! Before, everything was 720p.
iDVD can only make MPEG-2 files in standard definition:

You can't make a 720 or 1080 sized video and burn it to a DVD with iDVD.
High definition DVD's are called Bluray and iDVD can't make them:
True this is no Bluray. It is however 1080p size. In watching on a 1080p TV it will come up as full screen in the native setting. The picture is quite clear as it is not zoomed.
It's only 1080 or 720 in dimension when your HD TV up samples the standard definition file.
iDVD only makes standard definition videos (720X480 in size).
You are probably correct but 720 is considered HD. The TV thinks it's 1080p, has a large native format and the pic is very clear. Not quite Bluray.
The original comment was how to burn a DVD now that Apple has changed "SHARING" . This is new because iMovie has changed a few months ago and doesn't support iDVD.
Last comment:
iDVD can't make a HD video. 720 is HD as is 1080.
Apple has discontinued iDVD years ago and all new machines don't even a drive that can burn one.
iMovie can create 720 and 1080 videos but you can't burn them to DVD.
