Final Cut Pro X 10.2.1 freezes so often on Yosemite 10.10.3

Bought a top of line Macbook Pro 15" retina (2.8ghz, 16GB ram, 1TB PCI-E SSD, May 2015), FCPX 10.2.1 freezed about 5 - 6 times within 2 hours of editing, I couldn't force quit it, the laptop had no response at all, had to hold down the power button to restart.

I wonder if any of you guys have encountered similar issues and what are your suggestions? Thank you for your time.

Start by deleting preferences. Not only corrupt preferences can cause all sorts of trouble, but the crashes often result is preferences becoming corrupt.

Also, try creating a new user account and running FCP X in that account. It may be something from own user account that is causing trouble.

Hi Vic

I think you have a corrupted FCPX install, could be wrong.

Assuming you tried all of the tips in the Richard Taylor article and the fact that you did a clean install of Yosemite…

Here is what I would do…

Check other crash reports and see if crash is occurring for same process/event Ozone Framework (I think this is specific to FCPX and not a shared framework component, sorry lack of time for tracking down specifics; perhaps Tom W can help here, Thanks TW)

Archive the crash reports and then clear logs/delete them. (Just house keeping) Wonder where other crash reports are??

Uninstall FCPX using a 3rd party uninstaller that removes all components. This is important as sometimes simply dragging the app icon or right clicking and "Move to Trash" may not remove all the bits and pieces of the program. Un-installers like App Cleaner; TrashMe; or FCS Remover should remove all the files associated with the program.

(note: I typically use Terminal, but the Remove (rm) command is potentially dangerous, so I don't recommend this approach unless you are comfortable with Terminal.)

What we want is to make sure that the potentially corrupted framework(s)/components are removed/replaced with new code.

Delete FCPX from the Downloads folder, Important because the system may just re-install the corrupted previous download.

Empty Trash

Use Disk Utility or I prefer Onyx to fix permissions.

Re-download FCPX from the App Store (Note you may need to use the Option Key to redownload)

After installation is complete, repair permissions again. Really I always try to fix permissions prior to and after software/OS installs/updates.

Open FCPX, do not install any plug-ins, use different media and see if problems persist.

If they do, definitely make an appointment with the Genius Bar!! Make back-ups!

Let us know what happens.

FYI, I have several out of town family members and guests here for a friends wedding, so will not be available for several days. Don't want you to feel abandoned. We may be nearing the limits of my abilities anyway. If Tom W is still following, he may have some additional ideas, good guy Tom! Very helpful!

Best regards, may you only experience Happy Editing from here on🙂

Hope this helps, Greg

I think Tom Wolsky's advice is the way to go.

Backup your computer and take it to the Apple Store.

You've done so much testing and found nothing -- it shouldn't be doing this. Could be a hardware issue.

Just take it back to Apple.

Believe it or not, I had a MacPro tower that was a lemon. Tried everything, finally just had it replaced and worked like a charm! Sold it 2 years ago, the buyer is still running it. Works great!

Thanks a lot guys, following Greg's advices, here what I did yesterday and outcomes:

  1. uninstalled FCPX with App Cleaner, reinstalled FCPX from App Store, used Onyx to fix permissions, created a new library, event and project in the internal SSD, the project is about 1:30 min, no crash occurs during a hour and a half editing and export.
  2. Loaded an old library and an old 45 min project from the external thunderbolt HD, there was a short moment of freezing when skimming the timeline, freezing went away in 15 seconds, that was a scare.

If one more similar serious crash (making the laptop hang completely) occurs, enough is enough, I'll bring it to apple store.

will post updates, I so much appreciate your guys' time and advices!

This thread was very helpful. I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.3 and FCP X 10.2.1 and could no longer import from my Panasonic HC-V720 video camera. I could create an archive, and could move files from camera to desktop, but could not import either of them. Nothing happened when I clicked Import Selected. Trashing preferences and other suggestions didn't help. Until I created a new User Account, as suggested in this thread. Works fine from there. Inconvenient, but it works. It would be helpful if the bug gets fixed, and/or someone identifies possible causes of the problem/conflicts between 10.2.1 and things in the old user accounts. Thanks again.

UPDATE on June 18th: I might've found the culprit!

Apple Store replaced me a new laptop yesterday, kudos to their excellent customer service!

First day of testing: no crashes (internal SSD, laptop trackpad, no external monitor, only FCPX installed, 4K footages freshly shot with Panasonic GH4)

Second day of testing: it crashed 5 mins right after I tried to colour correct a footage from an external thunderbolt hard drive using wacom Intuos 4), couldn't force quit, the whole OS hanged, pressed power button to reboot.

The very likely culprit - wireless input devices: magic mouse, wacom Intuos4, logitech mx master that I've been using with FCPX, l think it is a bug in FCPX 'cause no crash has ever occurred with Adobe photoshop and Lightroom, whenever a wireless connection loses, FCPX crashes itself and the whole OS.

I will be only using the trackpad on the laptop for couple of days in FCPX to see if my finding is correct, meanwhile purchased a corded logitech mouse, will post an update soon.

I've been having this exact same issue. It's always happened for me when applying a color effect (color board adjustment) and playing back the change. Apple has already replaced the Macbook Pro once. They ran a test in the store and found a random GPU issue they didn't recognize. However, it's still freezing.

I do have a Magic Mouse and also a driver for an Intuos 4 (not connected). I'm going to try removing the driver to see if that's causing the issue for some reason. I've been talking with a FCPX developer for the past week, continuing to send crash reports. Hopefully it's not the mouse.

I saw you were on 10.10.3. I had this issue on both 10.10.3 and 10.10.4, but I am using a Magic Mouse. I have an Intuos 4 also, but it wasn't connected. Wondering now if it was the Intuos driver? Although the mouse does make more sense.

Do you you use Time Machine? My crash almost seems to happen on a schedule. I don't have evidence for this, but since my TM drive isn't connected, I wonder if something locks up in the service that starts to prep the backup. Or perhaps some other hourly service that hits at the right time?

Hey vic

Glad to hear you worked it out. Thanks for the updates!

Drivers, plug-ins, bad media files, corrupted app files, and even USB3 drives that are too close to other USB2 devices can cause issues. Keep USB3 devices away from laptop, especially in back.

I would first suspect the Intuos driver not being up to date/compatible.

Try using each suspected device one at a time on different projects and see if a crash comes back. You can do this in a different user account if you want.

Agreed, Apple support is very good. Have had them replace a 3 year old MP with a new latest version at end of extended warranty. They just replaced my mobo and battery on my 2012 rMBP, no problem!

Dave, I recommend you disable TM while editing and then turn it on at end of day. FCPX makes it own backup files every 15mins, so TM isn't really needed and soaks up resources. Open up Activity Monitor and hit "Back up now" in TM and watch what happens.

Also quit any resource hog programs while editing.

Again suspect driver may be a possible problem. Drivers are one of the files that can benefit by use of 3rd party removal programs. Typically several components to them in different folders.

Hope this helps, Greg
