How do I find my iPhoto pictures now that our system updated to Yosemite?

We recently updated our desktop to OS X Yosemite....and were unaware of the changes that would be made to iPhoto. We cannot find our pictures. All that is coming up are pictures that we have taken with our phone. Also, we are having a hard time importing pictures from our non-apple phones! It's taking a REALLY long time to import, AND telling me that not all the files are readable. 😟 What can we do to find our pictures, and fix our importing problems??

Photo was not deleted from your hard drive, only removed from the Dock. It will be located in your Applications folder. If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 you can still use your iPhoto library. If you don't have that version but some earlier version of 9.x try following Terence Devlin's instructions in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I went to Applications and found iPhoto. However, it says that we have an old version that will not work with the updated system we now have. It provided a link to the App Store to update it for free, which then told me that it was not available in the US!! Now what?!! How do I get to my photo library to retrieve all my pictures that I can't get to via the new Photos?

So appreciate your help!! 🙂

How you get to them is to use Photos or iPhoto

the way to use iPhoto is to update to version 9.6.1

To do that you have to follow instructions - Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

even if the very experienced users you gave you advice are wrong (and they are not) you can not use iPhoto now and if you delete it and can not get back you are in exactly the same pace so there is no risk -

You do what you want but when you ask for help and then refuse to follow instructions no one can help

In no way am I refusing help. I'm not understanding a lot of this, and trying to figure it out with the instructions I've been given. These photos are important to us, and I just am unsure how to access them. iPhoto was on our computer before upgrading. Now it's not. I can't get to my library. The app is in the trash. Trying to figure out what to do from there.

Open the sidebar with the key combination Command+Option+S. In the side bar will be albums, and smart albums like Photos, All Photos, Last Import, etc. to help you locate and view your photos.

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and us

e the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.

Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.
