How do I find my iPhoto pictures now that our system updated to Yosemite?

We recently updated our desktop to OS X Yosemite....and were unaware of the changes that would be made to iPhoto. We cannot find our pictures. All that is coming up are pictures that we have taken with our phone. Also, we are having a hard time importing pictures from our non-apple phones! It's taking a REALLY long time to import, AND telling me that not all the files are readable. 😟 What can we do to find our pictures, and fix our importing problems??

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

I tried the Command+Option+S. Nothing came up. We have the side bar showing at the bottom, but I'm not sure if that's what was supposed to come up or not. I really appreciate you trying to help me, but we're still not able to find our pictures that were put on this computer 😟. The only ones I can find and get to easily are the pictures that have been imported from my iPhone to Photos. I'm thinking we'll just have to get tech support to hopefully walk us through this, and can help us find our pictures. Still really mad at myself for updating to Yosemite.

Thanks so much, again, for trying to help us! We REALLY appreciate you and all of your patience!!
