Can't Install iTunes 10.7 on OSX 10.6.8

I'm trying to install iTunes 10.7 from the dmg file onto OSX 10.6.8 and I used AppZapper to get rid of the previous version of iTunes because it was giving me this error message here in this image. But after using the AppZapper I'm still getting this same error message. There must be some residual file somewhere remaining hidden that I probably need to delete in order to execute a different versions install. But then again, I'm only guessing? I need to install 10.7 only, not any newer version of iTunes. Any suggestions please?User uploaded file

yeah it has to be this iTunes 10.7 version only as I'm staying with iOS 6 on all my PDA's and staying on OSX SL. I'm trying to find where any last remaining leftover iTunes files that may be blocking me my installation, should I be looking for any particular extension or can you direct me to the correct folder in Library to delete, thank you in advance.

It isn't as easy as using Appzapper and re-installing. Here is a document I have in my archives but I haven't reviewed it in ages so I don't know if it is accurate:

Downgrade iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7 - http://www.emacconsulting.com/apple/itunes/downgrade-itunes-11-to-itunes-10-7/

If the above does not work, or you want to do it without Pacifist, or you want to know what is actually going on when downgrading, or you encounter error messages, here's more details:

Quit iTunes.

Get iTunes 10.7 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576 or the direct download link at: http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg

Do a few preparatory steps by making sure all iTunes components are not running and cleaning old files. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4557266?answerId=20475394022#20475394022. Do steps 3 and 4. Steps 6-8 may be also useful but I don't know if they are essential. Some of the other steps are not necessary, duplicate steps listed later in my post or are perhaps even unhelpful in the process.

Replace the iTunes 11 application with iTunes 10.7. Simply dragging the application to the trash may not work. Lion (OSX 10.7) and newer systems have iTunes integrated into the operating system and deleting is a bit more involved. Two ways to do this are:

1. (Easier) Use the shareware Pacifist utility (http://www.charlessoft.com/) to install iTunes 10.7 including all associated system files. Details at http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=16400819&postcount=6

2. (More work) Check this reference on how to delete the iTunes application itself:

Delete iTunes in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion - http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/13/delete-itunes-in-mac-os-x-10-7-lion/ requires either changing permissions on the iTunes application in Finder to read&write all, or using Terminal killall command to quit iTunes and iTunes Helper and sudo rm to delete the iTunes application.

After deleting the application there may be other files that need downgrading too. See the note about error -42408 at the end of this post. You may want to tuck these away somewhere safe until you have completed the installation of iTunes 10.7. I have not tested this but ideally if newer versions are not found then the installer will put in the old versions. This may include these files in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ which apparently get updated by iTunes 11:

AirTrafficHost.framework

CoreFP.framework

DeviceLink.framework

iTunesAccess.framework

MobileDevice.framework

After doing one of the two procedures above you will have to rescue the most recent old iTunes library from your iTunes > Previous Libraries folder. Rename it "iTunes Library.itl" and replace the existing one in the iTunes folder. A newer version of iTunes irreversibly updates your library file so you have to replace it with the old one or you will get an error message. Note, this will revert your library to the version at the time of the upgrade and you will have to update any changes made since. See:

Thanks for this info...a bit to digest as I'm going over it now. Just to be clear, I'm not actually downgrading because I did a fresh install of OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and staying put with it, and it's good that I read in your response - "Lion (OSX 10.7) and newer systems have iTunes integrated into the operating system and deleting is a bit more involved." So hopefully this will go smoother with my SL.

I'm not opposed to using Pacifist, I thought AppZapper would have done the job but it didn't. I'm okay with using the Terminal as well to try and manually get rid of all traces of the previous iTunes version so I can then do a fresh and clean install of iTunes 10.7 and have a pure unmolested or unaffected version of it. I think I was using a 10. (something version) of iTunes prior to me using AppZapper to get rid of it.

I'll let you know my results tomorrow as I'm going through it all tonight, thanks again 🙂

Limnos...I'm running into another wall it seems. I downloaded Pacifist and had an old 3.2.15 version which I tried to use then the 3.2.17 version thereafter and when I used both methods for unpacking the dmg file in Pacificist either the drag-n-drop method or the open a package button on it's interface, I get an inoperable "greyed-out" Install arrow button on the top left corner. And I don't know if it matters, but those Toolbar buttons aren't colored in the 3.2.+ versions.

And when I try to install manually from the drop down menu under File-Install Files to Default Locations is also greyed-out as well as Install Files to Other Disk... which is the option right under it. I have attached a picture here, but not sure why both Pacifist versions compatible with SL 10.6.8 won't give me functionality? Also, I was looking through the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ folder path and came to many files which I wouldn't know their purposes so its best that I don't try and mess with those unless I know the exact file to delete if necessary.

What could be my next step, some sudo killall command lines that you may know of? and maybe a regular manual install could work thereafter, or is there a way to get this Pacifist working where I can get the dmg installed through that...just dumbfounded as to why I'm getting greyed-out functions on the main buttons.

Okay, from where you were going it sounded like you were trying to downgrade a previous iTunes version and that is when you need to do all the additional steps. A newer version of iTunes should just install on top of an older version. All my instructions are for when you have a newer version installed and want to downgrade.

After your system installation did you run the combo updater to get to 10.6.8 (just making sure)? Are other system components more or less up to date (Quicktime, etc.)? Did you try repairing permissions with Disk Utility?

Jun 15, 2015 7:48 AM in response to Limnos

yeah, it was a 10.6.6 install from a disc and I did the combo update to 10.6.8 and I believe that had the iTunes 10.6.3 (which I also have that dmg file and a few other older iTunes 10's and 9's dmg files if I should try those first and re-upgrade from there) but I tried to do just the simple upgrade from the 10.6.3 to the 10.7 and it didn't take and gave me this error message.

So I then used AppZapper to delete out the iTunes 10.6.3 and thought it was going to be easy with a fresh 10.7 install in lieu of the older version, but I still got that same error message, so I'm like stuck now on that. All my other stuff is up-to-date Quicktime, etc. and no I didn't run a Disk repair, and don't want to go down that route yet cause I have to move some data around for an external backup beforehand.

Is that verification a Pacifist report (I have never used it and have not installed a new iTunes in 8 years)? You should not need Pacifist at all and probably not even try to use it. iTunes should just install new version files over an older version. It is only if you had a newer version installed at some stage that an installer will complain, will usually do so with a specific message about new and old versions, and you then need something like Pacifist which will override version checking. We would have to go through the report details to see what exactly is the problem.

Again I am not familiar with that report. On the face of it a checksum error can mean corrupt files.

If the permissions error is for the files on the computer it could mean they are set either deliberately or have been corrupted so you cannot overwrite the files. I presume this is all being done from an administrator account on the computer.

Jun 15, 2015 9:25 AM in response to Limnos

yeah its a report from Pacifist and I understand why you would stay on older Apple programs like myself 😉 theoretically newer iTunes versions should just overwrite the older iTunes but in this strange case it just didn't take. But I have done it before with other computers and partitions. Yes admin account.

But I tried a shot-in-the-dark here and it worked. Under the links - http://www.charlessoft.com/ and then for older versions - http://www.charlessoft.com/pacifist_olderversions.html it says; For Macs running OS X 10.6.8 through 10.7.5 on a 64-bit Intel™ (Core 2 or better) processor, download Pacifist 3.2.17 and For Macs running Mac OS X 10.4.11 through 10.6.7, or Macs running OS X 10.6.8 on a 32-bit processor, download Pacifist 3.0.10.

So I tried the 3.2.17 and it didn't work, so I had an old 3.2.15 version and that didn't work, but I have an Early-2011 MBP 17" A1297 | MC725LL/A which has 64-bit Intel Core i7 2720QM Sandy Bridge so under those Pacifist requirements it should have worked. So I tried the older version 3.0.10 for the **** of it and that did it successfully with no problems. I got a little worried there, but managed to squeeze in the install. Thanks for all your prompt replies man, I definitely appreciate it 🙂

ok, thank you..I'm going through the 2nd link of the forum now...but the first link though says...

"In the center of the iPhone management screen, you'll see a Restore button. Click that. When you do this, iTunes will show you a few introductory screens. After them, you’ll need to agree to the standard iPhone software license. Do so and click Continue."

...what that statement doesn't tell you is that that is an iOS software update which is something that I don't want to do, and others may not either. So the author of that webpage should atleast mention that to user before they lock themselves into a updated version that they might not want.
