Will Apple Music work with Sonos Speakers

I guess the good news is that it is here, now.

What I cannot figure out: I download most songs for offline listening on my Mac, since my internet connection is not very reliable.

But Sonos does not seem to see my offline music?

That's very cool. So you are saying that I can have offline/downloaded Apple Music on my iMac, and play it back over Sonos?

The reason I ask is that every other music service that allows offline caching, like Tidal, Google, Spotify, etc, so NOT permit Sonos to stream the offline, downloaded content.

If you are subscribed to Apple’s Music subscription service you simply add the Sonos Apple Music service with your computer or iOS device. Having done that you have access not only to the music available thru the subscription service but also any music you own and any of your own playlists. I’ve been using it since Sonos’ open beta started about 2 months ago.

What about music I do NOT own, but have downloaded to my computer for offline listening, from the Apple Music service?

I think you misunderstand how Sonos is working. All the music Sonos streams via the Apple Music service is on Apple’s computers - not yours. When you subscribe to Apple Music all your music is scanned by Apple’s computer and anything that isn’t part of Apple’s catalog is uploaded. This is the music Sonos streams if you are an Apple Music subscriber.

Of course you can also have Sonos play the music that’s on your computer even if you do subscribe to Apple Music…but I can’t think of a good reason. The whole wonderful thing about Sonos being able to Stream Apple Music is that your computer doesn’t have to be on or awake for Sonos to play.

Ah, that's disappointing.

I love how Apple Music let's me cache copies of music I don't own, so that I don't have to have an active internet connection to listen to music.

This way I have access to everything on Apple Music if I plan ahead. Download at the office, and then I can listen at home, where I don't have internet (yes, out in the boonies!).

The only down side is that it appears SONOS cannot see that downloaded music. So I have to find an alternative method to pipe it around the house.

I didn’t subscribe to Apple Music until Sonos added a streaming service for Apple Music so I haven’t tried downloading tracks and playing them with Sonos but it doesn’t surprise me Sonos can’t do it. Music you’ve downloaded must have some sort of DRM so that if you cancel your subscription the music you’ve downloaded won’t keep playing. I know Sonos can’t play music files with DRM.

Yeah, I agree. That makes sense.

That is why I was so surprised when some folks told me it was working, and I had to ask about it a few different ways to make sure that we were really talking about the same thing.

So, to be clear, it will not use the music in the cloud ?
