unclutter my mac

My macbook pro Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Serial Number C0*******V7P

MacBookPro8,2

Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)

I am looking for assistance in uncluttering my mac to help prevent another hard drive failure, I am concerned that it takes LONGER to get past the gray screen to my log on screen. I think this means too much junk.

1. Your "bank" is wrong: there is no bank app that needs trusteer. They are just stupidly sold to tell you that trusteer helps safety, which it does not, on the contrary.

So uninstall and restart and you will see that your online banking is working still. If you do not find correct uninstall instructions, say so and we will put the instructions here.

2. Seeing the Amazon adware plugin, I propose to download AdwareMedic from thesafemac.com and run it, it will delete the infections by adware.

3. Go to SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems: remove all entries with the minus sign underneath.

4. Uninstall the WesternDigital software: this you got probably with the WD drive, but in Macs this software is counterproductive and causing issues. The OSX is very capable of handling WD drives.

5. Flip4Mac can be uninstalled also.

6. Akamai software is always very sloppy and counterproductive, if you do not need it, uninstall it.

7. Adobe Flasplayer must be updated.

8. Unless you know exactly what to do with TechToolPro: uninstall it. It does not really do anything for you.

Have fun,

Lex

I was surprised that you see K9 Optimizer becsuse I called their support and insisted they take it off

It looks like the only thing left is a non-functional Login Item that is trying to open an app that has been removed. Go to System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Login Items, and remove K9-MacOptimizer from there. This will have no effect on the functioning of your system, but will eliminate that non-functional item from Login Items.

Trusteer is something my bank requires me to have for their account.

Trusteer is worthless. It is known to cause browser crashes and performance issues, and should not be used on a Mac. Your bank is ignorantly advising you as if you had a Windows machine, and has no way of knowing whether you are using Trusteer or not, so just don't tell them you have removed it.

I have had 2 hard drive failures in 2 years!

What are you calling a "hard drive failure?" If you have had to repair or rebuild your hard drive twice in 2 years, your hard drive may be failing and needs to be replaced.

If you have had to replace your hard drive twice in 2 years, it's unlikely that that was actually necessary. How are you determining that the drive has "failed?"

I USE TIMEMACHINE TO BACK UP MY MAC. is it safe to remove files off the hard drive without losing the files?

I don't know exactly what you mean. If you are asking if you can delete files from your hard drive, hoping that they will be preserved indefinitely in the backups, then you're misunderstanding how Time Machine works and the purpose of backups. DO NOT do this! If the only copy of a file is in your backup, it is no longer backed up. The file in the backup becomes the original, and when the backup drive fills up, Time Machine will begin removing things like old files that have been deleted from your hard drive to make room for new files.
