GPU switch causing graphics issues on my new Retina MacBook Pro 15 (Mid 2015)

Every time I open or close Lightroom 6.1 (Lightroom uses the AMD R9 card) the computer will switch from the Iris Pro card to the AMD R9 card; and there will be some weird artifacts on the screen for some seconds, then they will disappear. The artifacts are like mouse arrow trailing, some black or odd colors on some areas in the form of small squares on the LCD, etc.

If I disable the Automatic Graphics Switching on System Preferences the problem will disappear immediately. Clearly it's related to the GPU switch process. I've tested the Laptop as well with Mac OS X 10.11 DP1 and DP2 El Capitan and the problem is still there. I've tried with other GPU intensive applications like Apple Photos and the same thing will happen.

Any idea how to fix it? is Apple aware of this situation?, I've read some articles from Oct-Nov 2014 but I would have thought by this time, 6 months later the issue has been fixed, especialy with a new laptop model (2015) and the latest Yosemite fixes.

Thanks

Having the same issue with popping the whole screen and distorded screen for a second ...during normal work. Even no gpu stress needed. simply working in pages or numbers. Tried reinstall the whole OSX. But didn't helped. The issue is still continuing. And as it was said before ..if this issue is also appearing on replaced macs. I am affraid that we are stucked in loop :-( . These machines are really expensive... and this is what you got when you bought it ?

I was having the same problem as the OP, cursor leaving trail of confused pixels on GPU switch. It seems to be related having a magnified cursor prior to migrating to this hardware (Mid 2015 15" MBP). Changing the cursor size to normal and back to magnified fixed the trailing pixels problem, though there is still some flashing between the magnified and normal sized cursor when it is moved.

I had the same problem of flashes and flickering; the genius bar found problems with the discrete GPU (and also with the trackpad). Since it was a new machine I send it back and they shipped me a new one (that will arrive at the end of the week).

Hopefully the new machine will not present the problem. However it seems definitely a recurring issue between multiple users; and probably hardware related...

I think I may have the same issue.

I can reproduce it in several ways:

#1: on the two highest resolutions on Energy Saver's menu and ticking off/on Automatic Graphic Switching option

result: flickering in the top part of the screen

#2: on any resolution going on https://www.apple.com/music/ (I get it 3/4 times)

result: like #1 but also full black screen blink

I found a really weird behaviour that seems to stop the issue:

On Google I found a forum where a guy was describing how he solved the problem getting rid of Java so I tried to disable some option on the Java Control Panel.

Deleting the JavaAppletPlugin.plugin doesn't help but I noticed that when the Java Control Panel is open I am not having any of these issues (reloaded apple's music page dozen of times without issues, they start as soon as I close the JCP).

Also when opening the Java Control Panel I don't get flickering so I don't think it makes the graphic switch.

Sorry, couldn't edit above.

The Java Control Panel is switching the graphic to the AMD's one, that's why the problem disappear.

The System's LOG reports this while switching from AMD to Integrate:

I had exactly the same issue as goodwilldrumsfc on my 2015 MacBook Pro Retina since I got it at the beginning of October - the screen "jumping" or "twitching" with occasional white flashes and "static" and other artifacts appearing in the top 3rd of the display (which is an A02F).

Playing games that used the AMD GPU the problem got more and more frequent until the display crashed with a screen full of vertical grey lines and the MacBook rebooted.

I told AppleCare and they're replacing it with a new MacBook.

Thanks for the reply, any clue if it is an hardware or software problem? For what I saw it happens on safari and xcode only (but maybe is just because I use these two software for most of time). If this is "just" a bug of El Capitan maybe we can hope in a patch sooner or later. Anyway I guess it is related to the amd gpu since if it were happening in all macbook we should have seen much more complains on this forum.

In the past I had issue with kernel panic on 2010 macbook also because of discrete gpu, it seem macbook + discrete gpu is really a bad match 😟.
