My iPod touch 5th gen screen is unresponsive to my touch. The time changes accordingly, but I can't slide to unlock. My home button is jammed; I've been using Assistive touch. What do I do?

My iPod touch screen is unresponsive, and it only happened recently, after I updated to iOS 8.1.3. The iPod kept asking me to sign in to iMessage and iCloud before I updated, and it wouldn't accept the password I entered even though it was correct... It kept showing up repeatedly, to the point where I couldn't do anything, because it kept showing up every 4-5 seconds... So then I updated through ITunes on my computer and it still kept happening after I did it... So, everytime it asked me for the password while I was on another app, I pressed "cancel." Then, I tried to go "home", (I used Assistive Touch) and it didn't go home. So, I clicked the Power button and it turned off... I clicked the Power button again and the lock screen came up, as it was supposed to, but I couldn't "slide to unlock" or slide to "shut down" even though it changed to that screen... My iPod turns 2 years old in a month... Is there any way to fix it without taking it to an Apple store, or is that inevitable?

Connect the iPod to your computer and restore via iTunes. If necessary place the iPod in Recovery mode using the method described here:

Turn on without Home/Power Button

- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem besides the button and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
