Hi! This is a very frustrating solution but i have found a fix. If Your On Iphone All You Have To do Is go:

SOLUTION:

(On Iphone But Read to The End for computer) Go To Playlists -> Tap The Playlist You Wanna Add A Song To -> Press Edit At The Top Right -> Press Add Music -> Search The Song You Wanna Play And Select It -> Then Press Add. The Song Shows Up One The Playlist (Finally lol) If Your On Mac Or Computer, Still Do The Same Process On Your Phone, and it should automatically Connect And You Should Have The Music On Both Devices. I Hope This Helped Ya’ll! :D

I had the problem last night but this morning it works! (I'm using on my iMac.) I pressed "Add to My Music" and then went to My Music, selected Songs, sorted by Date Added, and there it was. I noticed last night a little circular arrow in the right corner of the iTunes, and when I hovered my mouse over it, it said something like "Music being added to MyCloud." I let it run overnight without losing the connection and this morning the Add to My Music works. Maybe related?

i wanted to echo the actual solution posted earlier in the thread! A simple phone reset solved this for me as well, yay for forums!

so for clarity and to be specific: I would be listening to a apple curated playlist from for you tab, click dots and add to playlist to add a track I heard (that was not in my library) to a playlist I made (like to listen), and it would not work. The work around if adding the track first to my library was multi stepped and annoying.

WIth reset, the same steps above successfully add the song to your playlist even if not in library. NOTE: was instresred to find this action ALSO adds to your library, nice that one action does both, bummer if you were hoping to add a track to a playlist without adding to library.

RElated possibly helpful info: adding a curated playlist to my music seems to add to your playlists, but not to library. NICE! I prefer that. How're, as soon as you mark that playlist for download to device, all tracks are added to your library. Now if you choose to remove the playlist, you must also remove each individual song from your library. NOT NICE. Wish playlists were separate like in beats.

This is indeed the solution.

I was having the same problem, every time I added a song to a playlist, it did not appear, unless i first added it to My Music. However, it did work on my iPhone so I thought this is probably some sort of a bug. ( I'm using an iPad )

I then went to Setting - Music , and despite the iCloud Music Library was ON , I switched it Off and then back On. A message appeared afterwards and I pressed merge. I then went to Music and tried to add a song to a playlist I created and IT DID WORK.

Does this work if you add the song from the player (while the song is playing) i.e. if you use the 3 ellipses next to the repeat icon?

Nothing I do (reboot, turn icloud off/on) will let me add a song to a playlist from the player - unless the song is already in my library.

If the song is not in my library and I add it from the song list (not from the player) for a given album (say, in the For You section) , it will add fine.

I see this same behavior on my iphone, ipad, and itunes on PC.

I was so happy to think that I found the solution, but no. I can NOT add songs to a playlist while they are playing. What a disappointment.

I was so looking forward to Apple Music but a simple mistake like this is just unacceptable by a company like Apple who earn billions and employ one of the best developers and yet , within couple of days since launching , every single website I have visited is full of questions and disappointed people .. This is just a crime ..

I don't know what Apple is trying to achieve here but unless they stop over complicating things and fix their simple mistakes I'm NOT going back to Music again.

Hmmm, his is sounding like an inconsistent bug as well as annoying one. Perhaps differing between devices, could be helpful for readers (and apple through feedback) to include device?

ive rettested: again I can now tap three dots on a currently playing song not in my library and add to a self made playlist on my device: an iPhone 5. This didn't work originally (why I'm here), did with one simple restart of phone as suggested earlier on this forum.

I Saw Pina's comment regarding iPad so chose to go ahead and try on my iPad too (traveling waany planning on installing yet), I actually had no problem adding to playlist the first time without restart on second generation iPad.

Once in settings and toggling the cloud options in music, I too had success finding my created playlists of old from iTunes on my device (6+) once selecting the 'Merge' option it offers you.

Seems the playlists first disappeared after i added most of my music to the cloud overnight. In related news, but not terribly aggravating as this playlist issue, it did create duplicates of the playlist for some reason (in tunes I mean).

I had that problem, then toggled off Show Music Offline, now it won't let me add any of my Beatles songs from my iPhone. They add them, then i click done and they all disappear, leaving the other songs there. I'm kind of over this now, and will stick with Spotify. I've never seen anything so ridiculous. Steve Jobs must be turning over in his grave
