Hi! This is a very frustrating solution but i have found a fix. If Your On Iphone All You Have To do Is go:

SOLUTION:

(On Iphone But Read to The End for computer) Go To Playlists -> Tap The Playlist You Wanna Add A Song To -> Press Edit At The Top Right -> Press Add Music -> Search The Song You Wanna Play And Select It -> Then Press Add. The Song Shows Up One The Playlist (Finally lol) If Your On Mac Or Computer, Still Do The Same Process On Your Phone, and it should automatically Connect And You Should Have The Music On Both Devices. I Hope This Helped Ya’ll! :D

First, this thread was made pretty much on day 1 of the service being available - so before one could search google and get a bunch of workarounds - and that is all they are.

Second, why on earth should one have to make a song available offline in order to add it to a playlist? And why would I want to download it when I can simply add it to my library without downloading and achieve the same results (in regards to being able to add it to a playlist)?

A big point in these music services is to STREAM music so you don't have to download it to your device.

Third, if you would bother to FULLY READ, the fact of the matter is the product is not consistently functioning as it should with regards to adding a song that is not in your library to a playlist. Not sure why you are taking offense with this being pointed out and with people trying to figure out a way around it

The facility is there to add any song (whether it is in library or not) to a playlist. For songs not in your library, I get an indicator saying the song is added to the playlist, yet the song is not added to the playlist.

Same issue here. I have some musics from mw own library and some other downloaded from the apple music. after adding the musics to the playlist, some of them showed up and some of them were just gone. There was a few seconds delay before the tracks dissapeared from the playlist. Most of the dissapeared musics were the ones without the picture (art-work). Anyone facing the same issue?

This right here IS THE FIX. So heres what happened to me.

The other day Apple music (on my iphone) said login even though I was. This is because they now want you to login with your Apple ID and not your Beats username (if you had beats first). Beats or not, this will fix your issue.

Now because Music cloud based to sync with your itunes they don't automatically turn on cloud sharing on your phone. This is a good thing because people would complain that their music/data is being moved around without them knowing first, so do what @fredmuito said:

Solution.

You have to authorize your iCloud Library.

Go to Settings > Music > iCloud Library - Turn it on.

Even though I lost all my subscription music and playlists (temporarily), the second I turned on iCloud in settings and everything came back instantly. I know its scary but everyone needs to calm down with the negative words. Its a brand new app, the app in INCREDIBLE, it has TONS of great features, and its beautiful. I have used premium Spotify and Pandora for so many years. Here is a great example of a feature that none of those can do.

1. Find a song on the radio (or on anything other than your phone)

2. On your iphone ask Siri "What song is this?"

3. Click on the song once it comes up

4. It brings up the entire album in Music and you can add the song/album to your playlist

Pretty darn cool. Give it a chance because its changing the game.

Please push "This helped me" below if it helped you because it took me forever to figure this out and now my Music is perfect and will be from this point on. Thanks @fredmuito

the icloud library being on or off is not the issue. Mine is on, I can see all my playlists and music from multiple devices.

Try exactly this and report back your results please:

1. From an iOS device, stream a song that is NOT in your My Music.

2. While the song is playing, from the player, click on the 3 ellipses and add the song to a playlist. You should see the indicator saying the song has been added.

3. Check the playlist and see if the song is actually there.

4. If it is there try another song and see what happens.

Mine never show up on the playlist. Unless I first add the song to My Music and then add it to a playlist.

As many have said at this point, if your iCloud settings are correct for music, the offline button in the music app is unchecked... then the solution is the following.

The song must be FIRST added to 'My Music' only THEN can it be added to a playlist.

This is very stupid and beyond frustrating as I have songs I would like to have on playlist but not be in 'My Music'
