iOS 8.4 screen rotation not working

iPad Air 2, 64 GB. After updating to iOS 8.4 screen rotation NOT consistently working. I have verified the screen lock setting in the control panel Is NOT set and I have done several hard resets (hold power button and home together). rotation works for awhile then stops working, another hard reset fixes it. This did NOT happen with iOS 8.3. Anyone else seeing the problem?

My home screen wasn't rotating after updating even though the rest of my iPad did rotate correctly. A reset did the trick for me.

Also having the problem on an iPad Air 2 that was updated via iTunes. I have since done a restore through iTunes as well, unfortunately the problem got worse, not better after the iTunes restore.

one way to get the screel to rotate again (though after a few minutes it locks up again) is to download a free spirit level app (the one I use is called "SpiritLevel") from the App Store, keep it open and when the screen fails to turn double click the home buttons and open the sprit level app, this seems to reset the orientation sensor temporarily.

I think I've found a solution: In my desperation I downgraded to 8.3 with a clean install. I updated to 8.4 through iTunes and restored my backup.

Then, i unninstalled 3 apps that i had before and thought I was not going to use anymore... and Voila!!!!! The Rotation was BACK to Normal. I've done the same thing with another iPad with the same result. So I can Confirm that is related to an APP.

I've found the following...

iPad Air 2, 16GB, Wi-Fi

If the device is left to sleep for longer than one minute and is unlocked on via the Sleep/Wake or Home button, the screen will come on after an approx one second delay compared to my mini 2. In this case, the Air 2's screen rotation will longer work, either on the Lock Screen nor the Home Screen. To fix this temporarily, press the Sleep/Wake button to sleep the device, then immediately press it (or the Home button) to wake. The screen will now rotate properly until the next time the device goes to sleep for longer than one minute and is awakened via the Sleep/Wake or Home button. If the device is awakened via a Smart Cover or Smart Case (magnetically), there is no issue.

The two issues seem to be directly related to each other.

Hmm, I have none of these apps. But finding at least three out of approximately fifty apps... 😟 I hope for 8.4.1.

But why should apps which are not running (not even in background) disturb rotation?

It is the first time I have problems with iOS. I am a bit disappointed wtih Apples way of (non-)communication. Is this their usual behaviour?

No community managers here or access to the correponding entries in their bug-database or replies to bugreports?

We seem to be discussing this and try to find solutions on our own.

I know. It's a complete hassle to have to go all app to find only a couple that are causing an isse. I'm not sure why it affects the rotation. My only guess it's that it might have something to do with something that Apple updated on the new iOS and that the apps in question for not being upgraded to work with newers OS's are conflicting.
I actually talked with an Apple rep yesterday and told him about what I found. They said that the techs where going to research on it.

You can always downgrade to the previous version, as long as you have a backup and is within the week of the new OS release, i think. 🙂
Good Luck!

II was going to downgrade back to iOS 8.3 but the iTunes 12.2 update appears to have wiped all my old backups. I only have a single update showing. For my iPad and a single update for my iPhone 6. There used to updates going all the way back to my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 before the update.

not happy with Apple over this mess...
