after 10.10.4 update, can't take Google mail online

After updating to 10.10.4, I noticed very little e-mail coming in. Though I use a couple of different accounts, most of my mail comes through my Gmail account. Finally I noticed an icon to the right of my Gmail mailbox in Apple's Mail app, and right-clicking on it I discovered that one of my choices was to take Gmail online - ergo it was currently offline. But clicking on the command to take it online did not do so. Something in the 10.10.4 update is preventing me from taking Gmail online. Anyone else seeing this?

Select the Advanced tab in the settings for the account and uncheck the box marked

Automatically detect and maintain account settings

Close the preferences window and save the change.

Are you sure you are not over your limit? You might check at the gmail site to see exactly what you have.

Technically, messages in IMAP accounts are stored on the server, although it does copy to the mac for offline viewing. POP would download the messages to the computer fully.

You might try verifying your KeyChain to make sure you have no problems with it. Maybe delete the KeyChain passwords for the gmail account. Verify your settings are correct.

Not much else you can do, or I should say I don't have anything more to offer in solutions.

Thanks. Unfortunately that didn't work either. I have tried all combinations of deleting passwords, unchecking this and that, but nothing works. Apple did contact me and I sent a sysdiagnose file to them, so hopefully they will come up with something. Otherwise, deleting the account and re-entering might be the last resort.

Did this mean that Mail had to re-download all messages? If I'm sure this works, I might try it as a last resort.

Yes, exactly. Nothing else was fixing it for me. Just refused to stay online more than a few seconds. Deleted and reinstalled account through System Preferences Internet Accounts. It started working and then Mail gave a nag message about two versions of Mail running on same computer, and then something about rebuilding or reconstructing everything (I do not have two versions of Mail). I just clicked OK.

I would have preferred an easier way, but after a few more hours it will be fully re-synced.

I guess I can do that in the end. If I leave the computer overnight, I guess it can re-download all 60,000 messages.

That shouldn't take more than a couple hours... I have 300,000 and it's almost done.

That of course depends on internet speed. I think mine is OK, so perhaps I'm too scared of having to re-download. I will wait a few days and see if Apple gets back to me with a solution, and if not, do this. Meanwhile I can use google's web interface (but, man, that is pain to use).

Reconstructing/syncing etc does not prevent you from using Mail as normal. I've been using Mail all day to read and send. I just click on my "unread" tab to make sure I see the new ones while it's still syncing.

Great, great, great! This worked. I deleted the account, and added it again. Now it works! And, it didn't even have to download all messages again. Once I enabled it again, it seems to realize I already had all the messages, so everything is back to the way it was, except that now it actually connects! Thank you. Driving my nuts using Google's web interface.

Well, I was a little too optimistic. In the end it behaved exactly like you said. It complained a second copy of mail was running (and in fact it was, I could see two copies in the dock). I quit mail, and now it is re-synchronizing, which could take many hours.
