Apple Music / iCloud Music Library - Genius results can't be updated right now. An unknown error occurred (4001)

I'm getting the following error after updating to iTunes 12.2 and attempting to setup Apple Music option (iTunes -> Preferences -> General tab: Check box "iCloud Music Library")

User uploaded file

I turned Genius off in iTunes and the error still occurs.

Precondition: I already setup Apple Music on my iPhone and made a few playlist.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Just wanted to update that I seem to have things working.

While I was on the phone with apple yesterday I cam across this post: Re: iCloud Music 4010 Error

There the person mentions getting rid of tracks purchased on his wife's account. I realized I had 5 or 6 tracks that I had in my collection that were from my wife's iTunes account. While I was trying again to enable iCloud music library again I found those tracks and deleted them. This time everything worked! I can even sign in and out again and everything continues to work! As an experiment I even re-dowloade those few tracks (via family sharing) and things continue to work, so it's possible that for some reason it just didn't like those particular copies of those files (and honestly I can't remember if I had added them to my library via family sharing the first time or if we had just imported them a long time ago).

It's also possible this was just a coincidence, and it just happened to work this time. It's also possible Apple did something behind the scenes. At the conclusion of my call (while the attempt to enable iCloud Library was still running) the person I spoke with said that my case was going to be referred to the engineering departement, and he would call me back on Monday with what they found out (if anything). It's possible that maybe it was sent over there, an engineer saw what was wrong with my account right away and just fixed something? Who knows. But everything is working now, so I'm pretty happy.

The only hitch was that I ended up with a few hundred duplicate tracks (mostly as cloud tracks). But I was able to use View > Show Duplicates to weed those out pretty quickly so that's no big deal.

I will also say that I was a little nervous at the end of my call. The "Senior Support" guy who I spoke with at the end seemed a bit confused and seemed to think that you aren't supposed to be able to have both Apple Music and iTunes Match (and thought that might be the source of the problem), which I'm certain is incorrect. I told him that it had been working fine for me for the first few days, and that I had read many reviews of Apple Music where they explicitly talk about running both at the same time and why you might want to do that, but he still seemed to think you shouldn't be able to have both, though by the end he seemed a bit less sure about it and mentioned that he would be asking the engineers about that.

Anyway! I just wanted to update and give another datapoint and possible solution for some folks! Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions!

I've been following this with interest as I have had the same issues.

After deleting the dead ⚠ files I stopped getting the error message but when I left my iMac trying to do the iCloud music library whenever I came back to it it would have stopped and the box in preferences would be unchecked.

I called Apple support and when I said I had about 28,000 songs they said that was the problem as iCloud music library has a limit of 25,000 just like Apple Match. I did point out this wasn't a great move for a company that's been selling the dream of digital music for years and he said I was the only person he's ever heard of that's come close to the 25,000 limit - I guess he doesn't get out much.

El capitan should fix this and take it up to 100,000 so until then it's back to Spotify for me.

Just out of interest though, there are a few repossess here from people with large libraries so I wondered if anyone has got it to work and whether that limit is real or not? As was pointed out at one stage, with Apple Match it at least had the decency to tell you at the outset that you can't do it with such a high number.

I had been having this same problem (only have a little over 20K songs) and tried a bunch of different things

Deleted dead tracks using Doug Script - still got error

Turned off iCloud music library & Genius

Deleted the Genius.itdb file

Turned Genius and iCloud music back on - still got error and iCloud music library wouldn't turn back on

Finally used the Doug Script to separate tracks by purchaser and had one from my son and deleted it.

Turned on iCloud music library and everything worked.

I haven't tried to re-download my son's track yet as I don't want to jinx it!

This finally worked after upgrading to OS X El Capitan, however I began seeing duplicates and my matched songs were playing edited versions of my explicit music on my phone. Lucklily everything appears to be back to normal after turning iCloud Music Library off. I'll be looking at other music streaming services moving forward. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.
