Apple Music (iPhone) - Playlists/Music not syncing

Hello,

I am having an issue with the Apple Music on my iPhone. Whenever I hit add to my library (I have iCloud Library turned on) it does the check mark on the screen but does not show up on my phone music list.

I also set up a playlist on my iTunes on my Mac but the playlist will not be synced to my iPhone so I can't play it it.

Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Thanks,

Brent

BrandonYou’re chatting with Brandon.

BrandonThanks for contacting AppleCare chat support. My name is Brandon. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

BrandonHi there Andrew!

How are you today?

Based on the comments you provided, I understand you are contacting us regarding your MacBook Pro Retina and issues with Apple Music.

Can you elaborate on that a bit for me?

Me:Hi, yes Its to do with having it working with my MBP and iPhone and iPad

BrandonOh okay! Thank you so much for adding those details Andrew!

Believe me when I say you’re not alone! It’s a bit of a challenge for any new software you come across and I’d be happy to offer any insight!

Me:I lost all of my playlists on my iPhone when I enabled apple music on it

BrandonOh goodness! I can certainly see why you would be contacting us for this issue! I know how important it is to keep all the playlists you have already created.

Me:I found out on a blog how to get them back

Brandon I’ll need to know more about each device you own and how you set this up in order to know if there were things done correctly or not. Sound okay?

Me:Yes, btw the blog instructed me to turn off iCloud music library on my iphone in settings. This worked as it enabled me to select playlists to synch with phone when I reconnected it to itunes on laptop

Brandon Sounds correct.

Glad to hear those playlists are working again on your iPhone for you :-)

Me:But now I dont know if I can still get the "spottify" effect with apple music. Ive not used spottify but I assumed apple music would give me access to all songs on your cloud, and on my existing devices at all locations

Me:Soz, in answer to your earlier question: MBP 2014, MBP 2008 (not so important), iPhone 5S, iPad 4

Brandon With Apple Music, you can use your Apple ID you used to sign up for Apple Music to have them across all Apple devices.

Brandon Do you currently have just one Apple ID you use on all Apple devices Andrew?

Me:Yes, I do

BrandonLooked like you were typing there. Didn’t want to interupt

Me:Shouldnt I be resuming with Brandon?

XavonAndrew, not sure what happened here my friend. But looks like you were disconnected with the previous advisor you were talking to. No worries, I will help you take a look at your case.

XavonSee what’s going on, and assist you.

XavonYou’re attempting to use Apple Music on your iPad, iPhone, and MacBookPro. Is that correct?

Me:Yes, though havent really tried on iPad... having enough probs w iPhone

XavonAlright, can you please explain to me what you’re having issues with on your iPhone?

Me:I lost all of my playlists on my iPhone when I enabled apple music on it

IanThanks for contacting AppleCare chat support. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

IanHi Andrew! Looks like you might have gotten disconnected from the previous advisor. I apologize for any inconvenience, but I will be happy to keep assisting you.

Me:Thanks Ian - Have you read the above transcript?

IanI was just now looking through it, sorry.

IanOkay, thanks for holding! So it looks like you were having some issue with the new Apple Music service as far as playlists on your iPhone is that correct?

IanAre you still there?

Me:Yes

IanSorry about that, though I lost you.

Me:I lost all of my playlists on my iPhone when I enabled apple music on it Me:I found out on a blog how to get them back Me:the blog instructed me to turn off iCloud music library on my iphone in settings. This worked as it enabled me to select playlists to synch with phone when I reconnected it to itunes on laptop Me:But now I dont know if I can still get the "spottify" effect with apple music. Ive not used spottify but I assumed apple music would give me access to all songs on your cloud, and on my existing devices at all locations

IanGotcha. Sorry again to hear you lost your playlists after activating the music service. I have had a few funny issues like that since the launch, but nothing too serious, although I can certainly understand why losing playlists would be a big deal, and I will be more than happy to help you work through this.

IanSo turning off the iCloud library certainly would be good in your case since it will allow you to sync your device and keep all you playlists in tact, but you shouldn’t really need to use it anyway for the music service, as you should still have access to the Apple Music content through the new tab, and should be able to find any artists on the catalog and should have access to their music.

IanI think the limitations are going to come in from you trying to add music to your music library and save items for offline play if I remember correct, since you technically won’t have the library enabled,

IanBut I will quickly try to look this up.

Me:Yes, if I find new music in apple music I would like to be able to add it to playlists, and ultimately be able to listen while online. I'm not even sure what happens with music that I have in my mac wasnt purchased from iTunes, I had the impression that would all be available without having to manually sync all devices. Further to this I am a musician and have some of my demos in my mac, which have been manually synched to iPhone. If these arent published tracks would they still be sucked up into the cloud and retrieveable on other devices? I was worried also that if this is the case (which would be good) that they would be added to the apple music cloud and others would be able to access them - which I wouldnt like as mostly they are works in progress for me to listen to and critique etc.

IanYeah, so you should still be able to add music to your playlists one your various devices, the only issue is that you won’t have them syncing without the iCloud library on. Now theoretically the music service is supposed to upload all your songs, even ones you created and it should try to match them to existing pieces, but if it cannot find them then it will just upload them as is so you can access them on all your devices. So in that respect its a little like iTunes Match. But you don’t have to worry about your songs being published, they are only uploaded to your personal iCloud library, so they are only there for you to listen to and no ones else.

Me:Hi im just trying out adding a song to a playlist on iphone.

IanSure

TonyYou’re chatting with Tony.

TonyThanks for contacting AppleCare chat support. My name is Tony. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

Me:FFS!

Tony Hey Andrew! Looks like we had a disconnect, let me get up to speed real quick.

Me:OK

TonyThanks for your patience, just making sure I fully understand since it looks like this has been quite a long chat.

Me:Yes

TonyOk, so if it’s alright with you, I’m going to address some of your questions as I come across them.

Me:Sure

Tony Apple Music would need to be enabled to get that “spotify effect” (where you can access music you had not purchased directly though iTunes), so you wouldn’t be able to enable it, download, then turn it off.

Tony As for music that was not purchased through iTunes, that is going to be handled separately from Apple Music.

TonyiTunes Match is what would allow you to upload music to iCloud, either of your own creation, or that was obtained from sources other then iTunes (so like from CD’s that were imported, or music purchased from Google Play, or Amazon’s music shop).

TonyDoes that make sense?

Me:Is iTunes match an older product?

Tony Correct, it came out I want to say about two years ago (http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window)).

Me:So, I'm paying for Apple Music but it wont let me have my existing songs in its cloud, and it wont let me keep my existing playlists?

Tony The existing playlists going away is an issue we’ve been seeing, and something I know is being worked on, so no, it’s not intended to work that way. The other issue only applies to uploading non-iTunes music to iCloud and have it saved on our servers.

TonyYou can still upload music normally through itunes, and keep it on your Mac, but if you want to upload it to the cloud, you’d need to subscribe to Match (and this is only for stuff not purchased via itunes).

Me:Will match continue to be supported once apple music is actually working?

TonyAbsolutely. They’re two different services.

Me:Can they work together?

TonyYep! I’m subscribed to both. iTunes Match lets me use songs I’ve obtained from other sources, and Apple Music lets me download any song available on the store. Now, truth be told, I’m probably going to unsubscribe from Match since I can just select the songs I want using Apple Music, but that’s because everything I’ve uploaded to Match is available on Apple Music.

Me:Also do you know if you have to pay for match, and also if it uses your icloud storage capacity?

Tony Match is $24.99 a year, but it does not count against your iCloud storage.

Me:So regardless of where I got my music from (apart from original stuff), I can be pretty confident I could get it all from Apple music, all paid for under my apple music subscription, and download all the ones I wanted to hang onto offline.

Me:But that the weak spot is that I lose my playlists atm

Tony Correct, and that should (knock on wood) be fixed very shortly. It affected me as well, and I was not exactly happy to find out it’s something that slipped through the cracks.

Me:So can you recreate the playlists now, and will they show up on all of your devices? When the playlists were lost on my iphone they were still retained on my MBP - this would indicate that if I took the plunge and created a whole new set of playlists on my iphone they wouldnt appear on mbp anyway?

Me:Can apple music scan your existing music library and then bring the songs into your devices? what I mean is - when you for example, disable Match, and go totally with apple music will you have to manually trawl through your entire library and search / add / download everything to get what you had?

Me:I'm trying to see if I can not go down the Match road

Me:*avoid*

TonyYes, you would need to add songs you want via Apple Music.

Tony As for that first question, any playlists you create now should be syncing to your other devices as well.

Me:What I think I will do is to just keep iCloud music library off for now and use my synched playlists, but when Apple irons out the bug w playlists, enable iCloud library and migrate to that system. I find this bad form on Apple's part as they say theyve given us 2 free months of Apple music but its unusable

Tony I totally understand, and I’ve been encouraging everyone to go to apple.com/feedback and be brutally honest. The higher ups get reports from the feedback that comes from there, and honestly…that’s how changes get made. They need to hear from people being upset to really understand how serious an issue is.

Tony I’ll also file a complaint for you on my end.

Me:Is it possible for you, in your capacity at Apple, to send me a message of some kind when it is safe for me to enable apple music cloud?

Tony I personally don’t. I have however received emails from the Feedback team (back when I was a customer, not an employee) when my issues were addressed (in my case, it was Maps being completely wrong about a part of my town at the time).

Me:They would have to be imbiciles to have accidentally let that happen. They basically pushed it out badly flawed and knew it! Thats why so many people hate apple's arrogance

Me:I know so many people who refuse to use apple products because of this

Tony I definitely understand, I’m hoping we get a fix out soon.

Me:Meantime I wont get my free 2 months - nicely played Apple I would say.

I was having an issue where I would make a playlist on my iPhone, but it would not show up or sync to my iTunes on my PC. It would show up on my MacBook Pro. I went to Preferences & under General I had 2 boxes under Library Name. The first box was next to Show Apple Music & the box below was called iCloud Music Library. On my MacBook, both were checked & the playlist was showing up on the MacBook. On my PC, the box for Show Apple Music was checked, but NOT iCloud Music Library. I checked that box as well & it started to snyc & Viola! My playlist appeared. Hopefully this helps someone who, like me, was banging their head against a wall. Cheers!

I believe i may have found a solution to this problem, though it doesn't seem to restore playlists entirely.

Connect your phone to iTunes > make sure iCloud music library is on

go to the file tab above the iTunes window while your iPhone tab is opened and go to library

Next click "update iCloud library"

this will add all of the music you have downloaded with apple music to your songs library on your phone, i still am not sure how to get these songs put into your current and previous playlists however.

I have just signed up to apple music and have faced the same "playlist on iTunes not syncing to iPhone" issue.

It was causing me real frustration because I have playlists neatly placed in folders on iTunes so that I could separate things like music, audio books, movies, smart lists etc...

I have tried a few things and believe I have found the answer to this issue:

  • Playlists I make in the iPhone sync back to iTunes on mac (this was the key factor - it proves syncing works)
  • However, playlists that were stored in playlist folders on my Mac would not sync to my iPhone.... (must be a reason?)
  • Playlists that I create from scratch on my Mac (but not in a playlist folder) do sync to iPhone
  • Playlists that I already had in a playlist folder, that I drag to be out side of a folder do sync to iPhone

So, I believe if you have playlists in folders on your iTunes it will not sync/will have issues syncing. But any you move outside of folders will sync. This fixed it for me - excluding the fact I can't have playlists in folders if i want them to sync. Try it yourself by creating a playlist on your iPhone and watch it appear in iTunes right in front of your eyes! (providing your iTunes and iPhone are all switched on for iCloud Music Library.

Now... Can apple fix the issue where it changed the album art of tracks randomly.... I have albums were individual tracks artwork have changed and i don't like it!

this business of turning off iCloud is NOT a solution to this problem.

If I create a playlist in iTunes on my computer, when can I listen to that playlist on my iPhone? It does show up eventually, just not at all in a timely fashion.

Nothing I have seen posted here works on a regular basis. And I purchased a 64GB iPhone specfically for my music needs - there is no freaking way I am unloading all that data just to re-load it.

If you are trying to sync the playlists & music between devices as a subscriber to Apple Music, all you need to do it make sure on all devices, the iCloud Music Library is turned on.

If you turn it off, then you are just forced to manually sync the music (playlists &/or songs).

For example, I am subscribed to Apple Music and I create many playlists on my iPhone. However, these playlists were not available in iTunes on my MBP. So, I confirmed iCloud Music Library was turned "on" on my iPhone, then went to iTunes on my MBP and went to the Preferences.

In Preferences, I turned on iCloud Music Library & voila - the playlists and music from my iPhone started to download to iTunes on my MBP.

My solution is to burn CDs for playing in my car. Sorry to sound like a wise guy, but I'm a working musician and need to listen to stuff that I'm working on while driving. Right now I don't have time to crawl through postings or deal with Apple Support. I started using Apple stuff many years ago because I never had to deal with failures like this. Once an Apple fan, now an Apple prisoner. I'm open to alternatives. On a side note, a recent IOS upgrade also wreaked havoc on the USB and bluetooth audio controls in my car. Score another zero for the red fruit. Sorry for ranting.
