mackbook pro 2015

Today is July 02, 2015

Running on OSX Yosemite Version 10.10.3 I have a:

- MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)

- Processor: 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7

- Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

- Startup Disk: Macintosh HD - 1TB - Available still: 159.19Gb

- Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB

- Displays: (1) Built-in: 13.3-inch (1280 x 800) - (2) External Thunderbolt: 27-inch (2560 x 1440)

It is WAY too slow - frustratingly so - when I got it, it was a bullet, now it's a snail...

EVERYTHING just takes FOREVER to load, to open, to process, to receive, to send, blah, blah, blah... the whole day I am waiting for the Spinning Pinwheel or Spinning Wait Cursor to stop...

I think I need a new MacBook Pro... but I don't want to buy it at the WRONG time ... ie right after I buy it, Apple comes out with a better/faster/cooler MacBook Pro...

So, can anyone opine as to whether or not it is a good time to buy a new MacBook Pro? Is it REALLY a NEW 2015 model? Or is something MUCH better just around the corner?

Please back up all data, then open the iCloud pane in System Preferences. If the box marked iCloud Drive is checked, uncheck it and confirm. Your iCloud documents should be preserved on Apple's servers.

Test to see whether there's an improvement, then re-check the box and test again. It may take a noticeable amount of time for your iCloud Drive documents to resynchronize.

Hi Linc Davis,

Thanks for your reply - sorry it has taken me a while to get back to this....

I started trying to do what you told me to do... but when the screen prompted me that I would lose all files ON MY MAC were I to proceed, and I got the heebie-jeebies ... I know, hence the back-up, but still ...

I noticed I was without iCloud space 5GB - and I thought to myself - HEY! I have already bought the 200GB package for both my wife and I on our iPhones - so should I proceeded to buy (again?) the $3.99/month 200GB package ... maybe you have to buy this for EVERY DEVICE? and I proceeded to do so - I looked at my bank account - and it certainly seems that they are charging for every device... is that how it works?

Anyway - it's now syncing to sufficient cloud space... we'll see if that doesn't do the trick

PS - the macbook IS already behaving better for all the things done so far to it ... not SO much of the spinning wheel as before ...

Hi again OGELTHORPE,

I ran the EasyFind for Files&Folders, Any Word, Ignore Case, Invisible Files & Folders:

Strangely enough EasyFind can not find:

com.pctools.iantivirus.kfs (1.0.1)

nor anything with the word:

iantivirus

- - -

I ran the EtreCheck.app again ... and there it is ... using FIND inside EtreCheck - cmdF - iantivirus ... still there:

User Login Items:

Helper/Wondershare Helper Compact.app)

iAntiVirus UNKNOWN Hidden (missing value)

Kernel Extensions:

/System/Library/Extensions

[not loaded] com.pctools.iantivirus.kfs (1.0.1)

Suggestions?

Dear OGLETHORPE,

With what we did back in July, my MacBook Pro started behaving quite a bit better...

Unfortunately, I must have done something recently that has caused the symptoms to return with a vengeance - (the everlasting spinning wheel)

Even Google chrome, when opening the home page (google) gets stuck with the message "waiting for cache”) - and if I go to Force quit Applications, things as simple as Notes go in and out of “not responding” - I imagine for similar lack of cache

Yet when I run Activity Monitor CPU load indicates 95% idle - Window Server is taking 3.1% CPU, but CPU time is 1:26.93 - kernel_task is taking 1.6% CPU, but CPU time is 1:45.20

I just ran EtreCheck - it took forever - would you mind taking a look at it and letting me know what you think I should do?

Thanks

H

Backup your data on an external HDD.

I would erase the HDD and reinstall the OSX.

Test the MBP to see if it operates properly.

If so, on a systematic basis, install your data and third party applications and again test for performance. (you have a lot of third party applications, some of which may be contributing to poor performance)

If you encounter problems, then uninstall some of those items that were installed last, and test again. The objective is to identify and isolate the 'problem child'.

When installing items, ask yourself if they are really necessary. Omit what ever you can.

Personally, I would omit Google Chrome and its various parts. Among browsers it is a resource glutton. I use Firefox, Safari and Opera.

Ciao.

Dear OGELTHORPE,

You said of that option:

The 'nuclear option' might work, (a total reinstall of the OSX and selective transfer of user data) but I am not certain that it is worth the effort.

I don't mind going through it if this is what you think is now best - but I've never done this - how best to do it?

My TimeMachine has Backups of my Total HardDrive including files and apps all wrapped up in single bundles

How would I go about starting from scartch - erasing my HD and reinstalling the OSX?

More importantly how do I then recuperate my files, folders, photos & videos BUT not the apps from Time Machine?

And if/once I have managed that - how would I start bringing the apps back one by one from Time Machine?

I would do this using a separate HDD from Time Machine.

I would run Time Machine to make it current.

I would use Disk Utility>Restore to copy the internal HDD to the 'new' external HDD. This will take several hours considering the amount of data on your HDD. When finished, you essentially will have two backups, Time Machine and the new 'cloned' HDD.

Then I would boot the MBP into the recovery partition.

From the 4 option menu, select Disk Utility.

Run Disk Utility>Erase and select Mac OS extended (Journaled) as the format.

Then exit Disk Utility and select from the 4 option menu 'Reinstall Mac OSX"

When the OSX has been installed you may start the testing process as I indicated before.

Note this does not have to be done in one session. The longer that you run the MBP between the installation of data segments and application sets, the better you will be able to gauge if the MBP is operating well or not.

Ciao.

From your 1st post of today - WHAT TO DO

(1) Backup your data on an external HDD.

(2) I would erase the HDD and reinstall the OSX.

(3) Test the MBP to see if it operates properly.

From your 2nd Post - HOW TO DO IT - referencing the same numbers

(1) I would use Disk Utility>Restore to copy the internal HDD to the 'new' external HDD. This will take several hours considering the amount of data on your HDD. When finished, you essentially will have two backups, Time Machine and the new 'cloned’ HDD

(2) Run Disk Utility>Erase and select Mac OS extended (Journaled) as the format. - - Then exit Disk Utility and select from the 4 option menu 'Reinstall Mac OSX" .

(3) HOW DO I TEST the MBP to see if it operates properly ???

- - -

Then, AFTER all of that, I will have an empty MBP with OSX Yosemite working properly on it

How do I bring all the Data back from the 1 TB HD back to the MBP - copy/paste?

How do I bring all apps back from the 1 TB HD back to the MBP - copy/paste?

By using it. Are response time satisfactory? It should operate like the day you first installed the OSX.

Drag and drop in the appropriate folders. (no copy and paste)
