I lost my playlists with itunes 12.2.0.145. Is it possible to arrange this?

I have years of work organizing my playlists and with the last update of itunes my playlists do not appear! How is this possible? How can I fix this? Can anyone please help me?

Thanks turingtest2! However I didn't delete anything from my library files.... I'm having recurrent problems with Apple software: iweb, pages (serious problems about one year ago), keynote and now itunes and aperture! Is to much for someone that is assign Apple hardware and software from the first Macintosh LC... Yes, I had an inexplicable problem with hard drive about 2 weeks ago, but I could never imagine the an update to iTunes could result in lost all my playlists! I'll try MediaMonkey and expect that I can use simple thinks that really works instead of so many news with this music news from apple that are completely irrelevant when the simple things stop work... Thanks for your time and your help!

-= Alternatives to iTunes =-

There are few alternatives to iTunes. You could review them but they will not offer syncing support to Apple i-devices or connectivity to iCloud/iTunes Store.

aTunes* - http://www.atunes.org/?page_id=6 Check about additional components required for full features.

Songbird (no longer updated, see Nightingale) - http://sourceforge.net/projects/songbird.mirror/

Jajuk* - http://jajuk.info/index.php/Mac_OS_installation_guide

*Run under Java 6 which may be slower.

Thanks Limnos!

The most important thing for me is to arrive home, choose my best playlists, organized as I like and listen what I really like to listen. I don't use my iphone, or ipad or my powerbook to listen music. So syncing support and iCloud is really much less importante that to have a system than can be able to give me stability to have my playlists well organized. I call this priorities! Syncing and iCloud is not so important than have my music well organized in my imac to listen into my home sound system....

Considering this, I'm confidence that I'll find something much better than itunes! Thanks for you reply and for your help! I´ll review your suggestions! In a near future, probably I'll cancel my iCloud subscription... When the new features are not able to maintain my priorities working well I just need to go out and look for apps that can give me what I had with Apple in the last years. As with Aperture... I have thousands of pictures that I don't want to have in a cloud, specially considering that internet access is not so easy when we are traveling to use and edit photos with the new really worst software... One more time when the new apps from Apple don't give us the basic things we need to go out... During the last years I've been progressively go away from Apple, due to this kind of strange strategies. It seems that Apple is not worried with who is working with the brand during more than 20 years.... I'm really disappointed!

While I imagine no corporation likes losing any customers I would think any large corporate model would account for a certain degree of attrition, particularly if it would require huge amounts of effort to resolve problems of uncertain derivation for a relative few. I am sure Apple can make a lot more money investing n person-hours into developing a newer iPhone than directing the same n person-hours into updating the software for my 12 year old computer. For each person reporting issues on this forum there's likely hundreds of thousands with no issues and thinking of subscribing to the program after the free trial. I am sure Apple does not design things to deliberately lose files but as I imagine I have already said in this forum, each computer is unique. It is impossible to design for every single configuration.

If you really do not intend to use newer features you could, at least for a while, simply stick with an older version of iTunes. I still use iTunes 7.5 (no, not 10.7, 7.5 from 2007) 🙂 I always look at a gadget or new piece of software and ask, "Is it really improving things for me?" before acquisition. Unfortunately downgrading is not simple unless you have a backup you made of your computer before upgrading.

You are right Limnos! One more time I did the same error: update an app in my mac! I should not did it, but I also had some issues related to apps that were related with the fact that were not updated to the last version. And yes, I'm not an expert! And that's the reason because I have been using Apple during so many years and this is also the reason I I'm giving up from Apple in so many aspects.

And you are also right, that for Apple it is not relevant If I'm leaving or if I am unhappy... The problem is mine and the solutions needs to be done by myself...

I too lost playlists when trying to synch various devices and had to restore iTunes from a back-up several times. I was not signed into iTunes. The only device that did not have a problem was my old iPod Classic which led me to a fix until Apple fixes this problem. The iPod Classic, of course, has no wi-fi or cellular data capability. Turn off wi-fi and cellular data on your IOS devices before starting a synch. I did that and had no problems synching my iPhone 6 Plus, my iPad Air 2 and my iPad Mini 2, with no loss of playlists or music from my iTunes program.

I don't have a solution, but I would like to voice my frustration as well. I SPECIFICALLY did not update to 12.2.0.145 because Apple has burned me so many times before with half *** updates. So after canceling the update every time I got an alert, I opened my system this afternoon to discover they forced it on me (it happens). "Fine" I thought, I will check out Apple Music (which is why they want everyone to update so bad). All of my playlists are gone. I, too, have spent many, many precious hours putting together specific playlists and having gone through this before, I know it is a major pain to get them back as they were and this process will yield duplicates that I have to go delete. Greed screws the customer again.

I agree with the fact that Apple's quality of software testing is dropping.

My iTunes files have grown so fat from buying from Apple over the years that I was forced to move my iTunes files to a Synology NAS external home server about a year ago. It seems that this version (12.2) of iTunes does not support iTunes files unless the iTunes files are internal to the machine running iTunes.

I also assumed a small update to the 12.2 release would not kill all my iTunes metadata and even "lose" iTunes files - didn't even think of it (I suppose there's lots of stuff I don't think of).

So I'll try the workaround outlined above to try and "find" all my lost metadata and lost files, but I do believe that if I'm going to make the Apple iTunes Store my exclusive music purchase point, that Apple would at least support external servers to allow me to access everything I've bought from them.

I even own Apple stock....

Right dbernelle!

I lost my playlists that were in my imac hard drive and in the right place! And oubviously my iphone is telling me that my music library is not the same that is in my iphone... This is all I never want to happen! All the other "playable" things as Music is completely irrelevant comparing with my music file that I organized during years. At this point, I don't want to know what is that Apple Music system and what is that for...

Jul 9, 2015 3:09 AM in response to paulovng

After spending a couple hours dealing with this same issue last night (and I didn't elect to do the update, Apple FORCED it on me because they want everyone using Apple Music), I found this solution: 12.2.0 disaster

-Quit iTunes

--Start iTunes while holding down the Option(Alt) key.

--A window comes up with an option for "Choose Library". Click that.

--Navigate to your iTunes folder, which should be in the Music folder on your hard drive

--Find the folder that says "Previous iTunes Libraries"

--Click the .itl file dated today, or the very most recent one you can find before you updated, and click on it.

Problem for me is that my last itl file was in December, so everything I have done to iTunes in the last 6 months was lost. I had to redownload all of my purchases, go find all my non-iTunes mp3's from the last 6 months, and my playlists and updates to song details (year, composer, etc) all have to be redone. This is DAYS worth of work that I have to do all because Apple couldn't keep their pants on about this stupid Apple Music service. So let's recap:

1) Apple forced an update on me

2) It caused me to lose 6 months of iTunes work

3) I called them, spent 15 minutes waiting to speak to someone about this, explained the situation, he put me on hold twice, then came back on with a "senior level tech" who promptly hung up on me (accidentally or not, who know) and no one attempted to call me back (even though I gave my number up front)

4) Apple makes good products (most of the time), but the company is horrible.

That's good news. However one drawback with using this method rather than the one outlined in Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash is that your active library file is now in a non-standard location with respect to the media folder. You may run into trouble if/when you want to move your library to a new drive or computer, or have a similar problem in future and have to locate the correct Previous iTunes Libraries folder to look for your older libraries in.

See Make a split library portable for advice if you want to try putting the library back into the standard shape.
