Canon MP495 series will not operate from Scanner/Printer Pane

This has been a perennial problem with Canon/Apple. I have an iMac and have tried every whichway to operate the Scanner from the Preferences Printers & Scanners Pane. Will someone please put me out of my misery and tell me it can't be done. I have done it in the past and hope to do it in the future.

Yes:

Latest drivers and utilities installed a zillion times

Latest Apple Canon update installed and reinstalled and reinstalled

Permissions have been repaired and repaired and repaired

WiFi connected to my network from the printer a million zillion times

All software installed and reinstalled even went back to the old CD that came with the printer

Installed printers are:

Canon MP495 series shows Offline in Print/Scan Pane

Canon MP495 series _21459B000000 shows Idle only in a printer pane

Canon MP495 series series (88.87.17.21 etc) Idle shows only in printer pane

I can print from the pane and only scan from MP Navigator. Is anybody out there that haas the same problem and fixed it or discovered it is unfixable.

To scan via the Scan tab of Printers & Scanners or scan via Apple's Image Capture application included with Yosemite you need to have a supporting ICA driver installed. To check that you already have this driver installed, open /Library/Image Capture/Devices. Here you should see a plugin labelled CanonIJScanner1 (there could be others ending with a different number). If it is present then you have the supporting ICA driver installed. If you don't see CanonIJScanner1 then here is a link to that driver.

So with the ICA driver installed open Image Capture and if the MP495 is networked then select the Shared section and it should be listed. If yes, select it and then see if you can perform an overview of a document placed on the platen (glass). Does this work?

Hi Pahu, and thanks. All has checked out as in your first paragraph and the latest ICA driver is installed and a CanonIJScanner1 app shows under Image Capture/Devices, however there are 0 devices showing in Image Capture, there is no Scanner Sharing option in Services on the Sharing Pane and the Canon MP495 series device on the Print/Scan pane page shows as Offline.

With 0 devices showing in Image Capture, and assuming the MP495 is connected to your local network via WiFi, then you may have an issue with Bonjour. For many Yosemite users with the same issue this was resolved with the 10.10.4 update, as Apple returned the mdnsresponder process to assist with network device discovery. So have you applied the 10.10.4 update?

If you have and the MP is not listed (below is an example of what you should see) then open Printers & Scanners and select to add a printer. With the Default view selected the MP495 should be listed. Is it shown with Bonjour Multifunction in the Kind column or Canon IJ Network?

This was removed in Yosemite and rightly so. And even if it was still present it would not impact your ability to see/or not see the MP495 scanner via Image Capture.

So is this the networked MP495 showing as Offline? Because if at any time you had connected the MP495 to the Mac then a printer would have been automatically created for this USB connection. And if you disconnect the MP495 USB cable because you created a new printer for the network connection, then this printer for the USB connection will show as Offline.

Hi Pahu and thanks for your comprehensive reply.

Para 1. Yes I have applied 10.10.4 update. I can find no reference to a Bonjour Scanner anywhere on the iMac.

Para 2. Here are the screen shots and as you say the USB Multifunction connection shows as I have plugged the computer into my iMac for this shot

If I remove the USB here is the same shot:

And here is the preferences panes with USB removed as discussed:

I have also reinstalled the Canon Inkjet Printer Software Update.

PS. With the USB plugged in from the Canon MP495 series the device shows under devices on Image Capture.

Thanks for your efforts Pahu.

As we can see there have been 27 views of this post just in one afternoon, this interface glitch has been with Apple/Canon for a very long time. There are endless posts and blogs on printer interfaces and the Canon MP 495/iMac stars on most of them.

I will take it that it can't be fixed within the constraints of online user knowledge and further, is a low priority glitch that I will have to wear with my Apple iMac and PIXMA Canon MP495 printer interface.

As an aside: one of the most basic devices that has been used with a computer since Jobs and Gates got the wheels turning is a printer. I find it very hard to comprehend why two of the major electronic product manufacturers in the world today can't get their products to interface without annoying glitches and faults.

Interesting. Cause the Scan tab that should be appearing in Printers & Scanners uses the same interface as Image Capture. In fact, if you did have the Scan tab and had it selected and then tried to open Image Capture, you get a prompt stating that the application is already in use. So it confirms that the ICA driver is okay - MP Navigator uses a different scanner driver.

So the question is why does the MP495 not appear as a Bonjour Multifunction device. Based on your previous images (thanks for those) the Add printer window is not showing a Bonjour Multifunction entry for the MP495. The Bonjour entry that is displayed is for the memory slot on the machine, so that you can scan images from an inserted memory card. And this does not normally appear in the Add Printer view, so the fact that you can see this is interesting and probably an indicator that your setup is the cause of your issue.

What is also interesting to see is that for the printer that you did create using the Canon IJ Network (your default printer) the Location is showing a computer name. This does not happen in normal setups. When you add a network printer the Location section is blank. So why is a computer name (I assume its the name your iMac is using) is listed? I thought it may be due to you having Printer Sharing enabled your local iMac. But my testing has shown that is not the case. So based on your image I would have to assume that you are not connecting directly to the MP495 via WiFi but connecting to another Mac that is sharing the connection. And if this is the case then you will not be able to connect to the scanner (which now makes sense that you mentioned not having the shared scanner setting under the Sharing pane of System Preferences).

So can you confirm; is the MP495 connecting to a wireless router via WiFi? And then the iMac discussed here also connects via WiFi to the same wireless router?

Jul 3, 2015 4:57 PM in response to PAHU

To confirm:

Q1. Is the MP495 connecting to a wireless router via WiFi?

A1. Yes the MP495 Printer (not the Scanner) is connected to a Wireless LAN and shows up in the Printers & Scanners pane in my last screen shot. This is the only printer shown as the last of the 3 last screen shots sequence that works normally i.e. prints. The Bonjour printer connection doesn't work.

Q1. And then the iMac discussed here also connects via WiFi to the same wireless router?

A1. Yes both the MP 495 printer and the iMac are connected to the same SSID. The printer mode is connected in infrastructure mode.

This is the printer settings printout (I have covered the MAC Address and WPSPIN CODE for privacy reasons:

In regard to the Scanner the only reactive app I have in Library/Printers/Canon/BJScanner/Utilities is the CanonIJ Network Scanner Selector2.app

And here is the screenshot of the open app which I have activated numerous times to no avail.

In purely layman's terms it seems that the Canon MP495 series Printer which shows as offline (first of the three last panes) and which only come online when connected by USB, is blocking the WiFi printer/scanner from the Print/Scan pane.

In regard to your comment:

"And this does not normally appear in the Add Printer view, so the fact that you can see this is interesting and probably an indicator that your setup is the cause of your issue."

If this is your best assessment then what would be the correct uninstall/setup process as I feel that this issue is beyond just connections and software and as I said seems unfixable using available options. Lets say I bought a Pixma MP495 series WiFi printer scanner today with the original installation disc how would I clean up the current Canon MP495 software/driver/.app/ etc. mess on my iMac and start again?

Hi all,

There is no solution to this longstanding Canon/Apple fault. The Canon MP945 series Scanner cannot be opened from the Printers & Scanners Print/Scan pane on WiFi. The Canon MP945 Printer can. The solution I have fallen back to is to hard wire the "WiFi" MP945 via USB and the System Preferences Printers & Scanners pane works fine. Thanks Pahu for your professional efforts.

I finally found a working MP495 and connected it to my WiFi network. I then opened Printers & Scanners and found that two MP495's were listed as shown below.

User uploaded file

When I selected the entry shown as Bonjour Scanner, this created a separate MP495 under the Scanners heading as shown below.

User uploaded file

When I selected this MP495 under the Scanners heading and then pressed the Open Scanner button, the following window appeared and I was able to scan a document placed on the platen.

User uploaded file

Next I opened Image Capture and expanded the Shared entry that showed the MP495. I selected it and was able to scan.

User uploaded file

So my test proves that you can scan via the Printers & Scanner preference pane when the MP495 is connected via WiFi. But as shown, the networked MP495 does not create a Scan tab next to the Print tab for the networked device - which is what you see for the USB connected device as shown.

User uploaded file

The next question is why do you not see the MP495 listed as Bonjour Scanner like I have shown in the first image. Now that I have an MP495 to play with I will try a few things to see if I can re-create your symptom.

Hi Pahu,

Thanks for your persistence. This is my window:

User uploaded file

I have never been able to get Bonjour Scanner in the Kind column for my Canon MP495. All that will show or connect is the printer via Bonjour. I am using the USB connection as you can see and that gives me the Print Scan window:

User uploaded file

but no Scanner seems to be connected in the Device window.

I was wondering could my Bonjour program be broken and how would one reinstall it or check on it's health?

On USB when I open the scanner by pressing Open Scanner it comes up with an active Image Capture pane. But all is on USB connection and when I try WiFi by disconnecting the USB Canon MP495 series goes offline. Apple seems to provide no controls or settings for Bonjour so I can't tell why it won't recognise my Scanner.

Thx.

Hi Pahu,

I also noticed this comment on another thread:

I do not get Bonjour in the sidebar that appears; I get the Extensions page after LHC on More:

I also noted this last post on that thread:

Doesn't work for me and as I say, the only solution that will work is via USB with Kind: Canon MP495 series, every attempt to use WiFi places the Canon MP495 series scanner offline. If I follow Bob's process I can add the Canon MP495 series (88.87.17 etc.) printer only and without USB connection use it on WiFi:

User uploaded file

So for near on 4 years this problem remains:-

My Apple iMac with OS X Yosemite V 10.10.4 cannot talk to the Canon MP495 series Scanner on the Printers & Scanners panes in Preferences on WiFi only through a USB connection (at least for me).

Bonjour is working on your Mac. You have already shown the Canon MP495 appearing in the Add printer window with Bonjour shown in the Kind column. So it's not an issue with Bonjour. As for Safari, you do need to enable Bonjour in Preferences > Advanced. Then you should see it either in your Favorites bar or in Bookmarks, depending on which setting you enable. Then you will see the MP495 listed - you don't see the scanner or printer - just the device.

As for Bob's response, note that its a different model (MP560) and thus does not apply in this case.

The issue for you is why is the scanner component of your MP495 not advertising when connected to WiFi. And that's what I am trying to determine. I thought it may be due to the type of authentication being used with the router. But that has not proven to be the case.

What I do note as different between our setups is that your MP495 is shown with its Canon network address in the Add printer window (the 88:87:17 etc) for the Canon IJ Network connection. As per my image, my MP495 for the Canon IJ Network connection shows its Bonjour service name. So I think this may be a clue and I'm working on recreating the same view.
