Canon MP495 series will not operate from Scanner/Printer Pane

This has been a perennial problem with Canon/Apple. I have an iMac and have tried every whichway to operate the Scanner from the Preferences Printers & Scanners Pane. Will someone please put me out of my misery and tell me it can't be done. I have done it in the past and hope to do it in the future.

Yes:

Latest drivers and utilities installed a zillion times

Latest Apple Canon update installed and reinstalled and reinstalled

Permissions have been repaired and repaired and repaired

WiFi connected to my network from the printer a million zillion times

All software installed and reinstalled even went back to the old CD that came with the printer

Installed printers are:

Canon MP495 series shows Offline in Print/Scan Pane

Canon MP495 series _21459B000000 shows Idle only in a printer pane

Canon MP495 series series (88.87.17.21 etc) Idle shows only in printer pane

I can print from the pane and only scan from MP Navigator. Is anybody out there that haas the same problem and fixed it or discovered it is unfixable.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Okay. Managed to stop the Bonjour Scanner from appearing in the Default view of the Add printer window. Now I need you to check a few things to see if I'm on the right path.

First of all I need you to add the MP495 that is shown as Bonjour. I note that in previous images this particular MP495 creates a printer with a generic looking icon, rather than the Canon MP495 icon.

Once you have added this printer I need you to open System Information, which is located under Applications > Utilities. With this window open, down the left column you should see an entry of Printers. Select this and the top right pane will show the USB connected printer and the WiFi connected printer (the one showing 88:87:17 etc). With the WiFi MP495 selected the bottom right pane will show information about this printer. Can you copy this information and paste back here for me to compare. And then do the same for the MP495 that you just added above that was listed as Bonjour in the Kind column.

Still in System Information, under the heading of Software you will see an entry of Printer Software. With this selected the top right pane will have several entries, the first being Image Capture Devices. With this selected the bottom right pane some information. Again, copy this and paste back here.

The last thing I need is also in Printer Software and called Image Capture Support. With this selected, copy the information in the bottom right pane and paste back here.

That's it for now. I will do some more testing once I have this requested information.

And I get the same for each of the three printers as I connect them in sequence:

Thanks but there are some things missing. Have to ask why you only have one printer shown in the first image and 3 printers in the third image? Did you remove them and start again? Anyway, now that you have added the networked MP495 (the one with 88:87... in its name) can you show me the system information for that printer.

And re the last image, I also need to see what is shown for Image Capture Devices.

With regards to the MP495 that is shown as Bonjour, this appears to be a shared printer advertised by your Netgear router. This would be so that you can print to the MP495 via an iOS device. So this printer would never give you the ability to scan.

A. Because you requested: First of all I need you to add the MP495 that is shown as Bonjour. I note that in previous images this particular MP495 creates a printer with a generic looking icon, rather than the Canon MP495 icon.

So why can't I scan on the Name: Canon MP495 series (88.87.17 etc.) Kind: Canon IJ Network when I can scan and print on Name: Canon MP495 series Kind:

USB Multifunction.

I would say that it is due to design. I remember older models of Canon devices having the separate scanner entry - not a combined Print/Scan tab that you see for the USB connected MP495.

There is one thing I am not seeing here and I'm wondering if this is the cause. In a previous image the networked MP495 shown as Canon IJ Network is displayed with its Network Address. My networked MP495 is shown with its Bonjour Service Name. So why the difference?

Were you able to connect to the MP495 via the Bonjour bookmark in Safari? To confirm how that's done, open Safari > Preferences and select the Advanced tab. Here you will see an entry for Bonjour. Enable "Include Bonjour in the Bookmarks menu" and then close the Preferences window. Now if you click the Bookmarks menu you should see an entry of Bonjour. Is the MP495 listed here? If yes, then select it to connect to the internal web page of the printer. Here you will see an Advanced button. Click this to open the top page of the MP495. Under the heading of Printer Information you will see Bonjour Service Name. What is shown here?

This is not so as I have been able to use the Scanner listed on the Scanners & Printers pane in the Devices column before OS X 10.4.4.

No.

I see it.

Did that. Rebooted and no Bonjour entry.

So why is no Bonjour Printer or Scanner showing for my iMac?

You have made no comment on the System Information.

Thanks for your efforts but we are at an inconclusive dead end.

Well I just tried it on Mavericks and found the same setup as Yosemite.

Before I installed the ICA driver (CanonIJScanner1) there was no sign of the MP495.

I then installed the ICA driver (misd-mac-ijscanner1-4_0_0-ea19_2.dmg), opened Printers & Scanners and clicked the plus button. Immediately under the plus button, I saw the MP495 listed as a scanner.

If I selected Add Printer or Scanner, the Default view of the Add printer window was shown and there was the MP495 shown as Bonjour Scanner.

And after selecting it and clicking Add, the MP495 was added under the heading of Scanners.

Because it appears there is an issue with Bonjour. There was lots of users on 10.10.3 having the same issue due to the removal of mDNSResponder and replaced with discoveryd. But Apple put the mDNSResponder back in 10.10.4 so maybe your MP495 is not working correctly. Or, since the Netgear is advertising a shared printer via Bonjour, maybe its the culprit?

That's cause you're not paying me enough 😉

The printer information you showed was for the USB connection. I wanted the network MP495 that used the Canon IJ Network. And the scanner information was the same as I had so there was no obvious issue there.

sqwark wrote:

Possibly in your mind. Based on my testing I've concluded its an issue with your setup. If you don't want to do any more and just use MP Navigator then that's fine. I'm happy to let it go and move on to something else.
