ios 8.4 breaks charging

Hi,

I upgraded my son's ipad yesterday to 8.4. To do the upgrade, as the battery was at 40% I plugged it into my normal charging set up - Anker 5 port 40w charger, USB extension cable and Apple lightening cable so I know this works. After the upgrade I noticed it was no longer charging. If I removed the lightening cable and re-inserted it, the charging light briefly flashed then went out. If I removed the USB extension cable, so directly connected the Anker to the lightening cable, charging then resumed. To test things out I then used the genuine Apple brick and that was OK with the lightening cable but not the USB extension cable as well. I then replugged the lightening cable back into the Anker charger and that would no longer work. I tried plugging the lightening cable into my Dell laptop and again the green charging light flashed on then reverted to not charging. Note I can charge from the genuine Apple charger and lightening cable so the device is still usable until the battery dies but I really need to be able to use an extension cable.

It seems like ios 8.4 has changed some parameter (voltage?) required at the lightening socket to allow charging, but it must be outside Apple's own specification as they say you should be able to charge from a PC/Laptop USB socket.

I am in serious difficulty now. My son is disabled with severe learning difficulties and needs the longer lead so he does not drag the mains cable round with him or put undue strain on the lightening cable. The longer lead is also needed so he can use it on long journies in the car to reach the car charger as the batteries don't last a long journey.

Please can I have an urgent fix for the problem?

TIA,

Nick

PS I am not sure which category to post into as I dont see an ios specific category, so if I have used the wrong one, please can you change it?

I've checked the plugs and sockets and they are fine.

My other son has no issue with his ipad mini (not updated to 8.4) with the usb extension cable and lightening cable and PSU I am trying to use with the ipad air on 8.4.

Since this happened during the update while the device was plugged in, I have a very strong suspicion Apple have done something like raise the voltage requirement for 8.4 devices, but why? It looks like other reports are beginning to hit these forums now so I know I am not the only one.

How long is your combined cable + extension? With my Air 2 I have used the 10 foot microUSB cable from this set:

with this Lightning adapter:

I've had issues in the past with USB extender cords not working well.

There were some iPhone fires caused by off-brand cables and Apple was blamed. IOS-8 ensures that only approved cables will be used. However, it appears that it has been incorrectly identifying true Apple cables as non-approved!

If your cable is not Apple, your only option is to replace it with an Apple cable. If you do have an Apple cable, you need to contact Apple support - 800-275-2273 in the U.S.A. and I think Canada. If an Apple Store is convenient for you, a visit there is probably a better solution (there is no charge)

It was fine with 8.3 and broke with 8.4 with an extension cable. I can't even charge the device of a PC with 8.4 now as you are supposed to be able to, and all with a genuine lightning cable. Do Apple even supply a long lightning cable or USB extension. I am in the UK so I'll give them a ring here.

I am also going to see if I am still in the window which allows downgrading from 8.4 to 8.3.

Firstly I am not particularly happy that a software update from Apple forces me to spend nearly 10% of the cost of the ipad on a new cable.....

.... and now this is getting worse. I was going to try to downgrade the ios which you appear to be able to do for a short period after a new ios release, but every time I plug the device into my pc (where it won't charge ....), iTunes keeps asking me if I want to restore from backup or set the device up as a new ipad. I don't want to do either. I want to back it up again before trying to downgrade the ios. I have tried restoring from backup and that works but the computer will still not recognise the ipad.

I will phone Apple tomorrow and try not to vent ......

Well, you're attempting to downgrade the IOS, which is not supported. I have no clue what can be done to help you.

Hi,

I have the same problem. After updating my iPad mini 2 to iOS 8.4 I can not use my original docking charge cable + docking to lightning adapter anymore.

I use this combination also in my car, as it has only a docking adapter built-in. It worked perfectly fine with iOS 8.3

When I plug in the charging cable, it briefly shows the charging status (big green battery symbol) and then it says "Not Charging" on the top right corner.

However, the iPad is still being charged as I can see rising percentage on the battery meter.

I would like to get back the old functionality back. I am using only original Apple charging cables. 😉

I spoke to a lady at Apple today (the iPad is under 3 months old so I still get free support) and she has bad news. My suspicions are correct that Apple have tightened up on some parameter to try to force you to use Apple approved devices only. She said there were too many instances of 3rd party devices damaging their products. I can still charge with one third party charger so I would guess they have done something like make the voltage requirement at the Lightning connector a bit higher. Some 3rd party chargers will work and some won't. Also, as I can't use my 3m USB extension cable but can use a c.1m extension cable, it again supports my reasoning as the voltage drop along the longer (cheaper) extension might just push it out of tolerance but the shorter cable is OK. I have not yet tried my car chargers (cigarette lighter adaptors).

A bit fortunately, the lady at Apple offered me a 2m Apple Lightning cable f.o.c, possibly because of my disabled son's need. It should arrive at the end of the week.

I am still stuck with having to use multiple power bricks instead of a 5-port brick and I don't know what the status is of my car chargers yet. I just hope one of them works.

Also FWIW with iTunes, of you are stuck in a restore loop, just choose to set up the device as new. It takes a couple of minutes but you don't lose anything.

How did you go with the new cable? my iPhone 5s has had the same problem. With apple cables, charger (new) but no luck.

The only way I've managed to get it to charge is if I turn it off, and in the shutdown mode as the wheel starts to come on, and I plug the usb in.

(Incidentally this trick works for certified apple 3rd party usbs and chargers too)

I leave it for a couple of hours and try it. It's charged.

But the amount of use I'm getting is cut short also...the battery doesn't seem to last as long...

it syncs off iTunes, but there is no charging while it's plugged in. only happened since I upgraded to 8.4.
