ios 8.4 breaks charging

Hi,

I upgraded my son's ipad yesterday to 8.4. To do the upgrade, as the battery was at 40% I plugged it into my normal charging set up - Anker 5 port 40w charger, USB extension cable and Apple lightening cable so I know this works. After the upgrade I noticed it was no longer charging. If I removed the lightening cable and re-inserted it, the charging light briefly flashed then went out. If I removed the USB extension cable, so directly connected the Anker to the lightening cable, charging then resumed. To test things out I then used the genuine Apple brick and that was OK with the lightening cable but not the USB extension cable as well. I then replugged the lightening cable back into the Anker charger and that would no longer work. I tried plugging the lightening cable into my Dell laptop and again the green charging light flashed on then reverted to not charging. Note I can charge from the genuine Apple charger and lightening cable so the device is still usable until the battery dies but I really need to be able to use an extension cable.

It seems like ios 8.4 has changed some parameter (voltage?) required at the lightening socket to allow charging, but it must be outside Apple's own specification as they say you should be able to charge from a PC/Laptop USB socket.

I am in serious difficulty now. My son is disabled with severe learning difficulties and needs the longer lead so he does not drag the mains cable round with him or put undue strain on the lightening cable. The longer lead is also needed so he can use it on long journies in the car to reach the car charger as the batteries don't last a long journey.

Please can I have an urgent fix for the problem?

TIA,

Nick

PS I am not sure which category to post into as I dont see an ios specific category, so if I have used the wrong one, please can you change it?

HI Rafa,

i don't have a Genius Bar available in my area. If you have one, there is no harm in trying them. (it can't get much worse, can it?)

There now does appear to be an increased recognition of this problem.

That has affected a small proportion of users, as our problem figures here: http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/ios-8-problems/12/

my two cents.

I'm having the same problem with genuine Apple chargers and cables (as well as my car charger - that was a pain on a long car journey yesterday). It's more than one charger which has suddenly stopped working so I can't see that it is the charger that has suddenly become faulty. it seems to be a lighning issue rather than a 32 pin issue and older devices which haven't upgraded to iOS 8.4.1 are all fine.

Based on many previous iOS updates, I find that sometimes glitches happen with the update - some people suffer from them; most don't. I remember one a few years ago which meant my iPhone 4 battery would drain from full to empty in a couple of hours.

Lots of peculiar solutions get mentioned but I've found the best thing to do is to reinstall the new iOS. I'll do that later and hopefully it will fix the problem.

Im having the same issue. I have an iphone 5 and just did the update. Unfortunately my phone was almost out and i got the same "This cable or accessory is not certified or may not work reliably with this iPhone” warning/message and I know that they are.

Tried to charge it in my car, usb and wall adapter and to my computer and nothing works. with 3 different apple cables. (mine, my moms and my dads 😉)

Im going to leave it plugged in overnight to see if it charges a bit anyway. its totally out now so i can't reinstall or restart or do anything... right?
Not sure what my options are if I can't turn the device on and can't charge it to turn it on!

HELP!

No! 😠

I thought it had for a while but I've just plugged my iPhone in now and it didn't work. It started with 8.4.1 and only seems to affect my devices with lightning connectors - that's 3 iPhones and 1 iPad mini. The 32 pin devices (iPad and two old iPhones) work just fine.

I can charge the Lightning devices in some ways - they charge from a newer iMac and by plugging into mains wired USB charging ports I have at work; they don't charge from an older iMac, an oldish MacBook Air, my Windows laptop, nor the (original Apple) wall plugs. So it seems to be something to do with the power they draw. Very irritating message that it's not an Apple charger - YES IT ******* WELL IS!

Someone shared that they were able to charge their phone on a new macbook pro and that worked for me. I have a 2011 macbook pro as well and it didn't work on that one. After it getting charged on my macbook it now charges on other outlets.... very strange. I will still get the message that my cable is not an apple cable (even though it is) but then it charges anyway.

I did nothing to fix it except have it plugged into a new macbook and have it charge. after that is seems to pick and chose when it wants to charge and work with the wires!

scared to do the new update.

Has anyone done that lates update and have their issues fixed?
