ios 8.4 breaks charging

Hi,

I upgraded my son's ipad yesterday to 8.4. To do the upgrade, as the battery was at 40% I plugged it into my normal charging set up - Anker 5 port 40w charger, USB extension cable and Apple lightening cable so I know this works. After the upgrade I noticed it was no longer charging. If I removed the lightening cable and re-inserted it, the charging light briefly flashed then went out. If I removed the USB extension cable, so directly connected the Anker to the lightening cable, charging then resumed. To test things out I then used the genuine Apple brick and that was OK with the lightening cable but not the USB extension cable as well. I then replugged the lightening cable back into the Anker charger and that would no longer work. I tried plugging the lightening cable into my Dell laptop and again the green charging light flashed on then reverted to not charging. Note I can charge from the genuine Apple charger and lightening cable so the device is still usable until the battery dies but I really need to be able to use an extension cable.

It seems like ios 8.4 has changed some parameter (voltage?) required at the lightening socket to allow charging, but it must be outside Apple's own specification as they say you should be able to charge from a PC/Laptop USB socket.

I am in serious difficulty now. My son is disabled with severe learning difficulties and needs the longer lead so he does not drag the mains cable round with him or put undue strain on the lightening cable. The longer lead is also needed so he can use it on long journies in the car to reach the car charger as the batteries don't last a long journey.

Please can I have an urgent fix for the problem?

TIA,

Nick

PS I am not sure which category to post into as I dont see an ios specific category, so if I have used the wrong one, please can you change it?

Thank you for your answer, Philly,

There is hope... I had my iPad connected to the local supply during the whole night for charging... No sign of special event as I've connected it (20%)... but miracle : I've passed to 34% this morning... (the battery was usually full after a night). I don't absolutely know what I have to think about that... Is the indication for the battery wrong ? But that doesn't explain why the connection to iTunes doesn't work...

Best wishes

iI'm sure that you are knowledgeable about many things but on this one your missing the mark. I too am having charging issues that started after I updated to 8.4....before I updated my phone would fully charge to 100% within 1 to 1 1/2 hours no matter the battery level. Since I updated my phone takes hours to fully charge. I will be at the Apple Store tomorrow cause something is definitely wrong with this update.

can't either charge or connect my iPhone 5c to iTunes. I have tried everything: wall-mount charger, conventional charger, switching cables (all from Apple). First I thought it was a cable problem, sometimes I'd be successful charging it... Then I thought it was the port. But yes, now I think it can be a problem with ios 8.4. It really *****.

Now my iPhone is flat dead. Can't charge it anymore. I just leave it there forever hoping it will come back to life.

I Left my phone plugged in for a couple of days. Then when it turned on, after two days, I did: the phone didn't turn on when the cable was plugged in (as is the norm). If it does turn on, do the following...fast.

  1. Plug the USB cable to the wall-charger
  2. Turn off the iPhone and when you see the loading wheel spinning, plug the charger in the iPhone
  3. Let the iPhone be connected to the charger for a while. Don’t switch it on
  4. After about 15 minutes, turn it on.

The iPhone had charged and did steps 1-3 again But thwn for about 40 minutes.

I now never let it die. I do steps 1-3 all the time (twice a day). I am hoping the new iOS will fix it...

i sincerely hope this helps.

Hi all,

I am the OP and it was my first visit to these forums. It looks like it is only community support here with some fairly evangelical posters (i.e. all things Apple do are good and it must be the users fault). There do not seem to be any Apple employees helping out or responding. Please can I suggest that everyone who has charging issues post 8.4 use Apple's feedback form (probably Product Support) to let them know of the issue? The more people who do the more likely it is to be fixed (but don't hold your breath on this one). I was lucky as my iPad was less than 90 days old so I could use their phone support. Most other posters don't seem to be so lucky.

Nick

P.S. I used the product feedback form within days of the issue.

Evangelism is a common accusation. The truth is that the main helpers here have enough experience to recognise where the fault normally lies. For instance, if the charging issues suffered by many posters here were a direct result of a fault in iOS 8.4, then tens of millions of users would have the same problem. They do not, otherwise it would be reported in the world's media. It is therefore fairly transparent that the problem lies withing individual's setups or hardware, not iOS 8.4. But to suggest this of course results in accusations such as "it is only community support here with some fairly evangelical posters (i.e. all things Apple do are good and it must be the users fault)."

As a point of information, Apple do NOT respond on these forums, which are manned only by volunteer users.

JUST THE FACTS - As reported by many people there are charging issues with upgrading to IOS 8.4.

Before the upgrade my iPad Air (32GB) was operating on IOS and had no charging issues. I regularly used a 1 m genuine Apple lightning cable to charge my iPad using the USB port (2.1 amp) on my MacBook Pro (8.1). Never any problem.

Yesterday, using the same cable that had charged it all morning, I upgraded to IOS 8.4. After the update was finished my iPad Air would no longer charge using the same cable and laptop mentioned. All you get is a "not charging" message.

Using the SAME lightning cable and an Apple ipad air charger the ipad charges normally.

So in it's attempt to ban outside vendors with dangerous products it looks like Apple has eliminated it's own laptops.

Hopefully this will be addressed soon.
