ios 8.4 breaks charging

Hi,

I upgraded my son's ipad yesterday to 8.4. To do the upgrade, as the battery was at 40% I plugged it into my normal charging set up - Anker 5 port 40w charger, USB extension cable and Apple lightening cable so I know this works. After the upgrade I noticed it was no longer charging. If I removed the lightening cable and re-inserted it, the charging light briefly flashed then went out. If I removed the USB extension cable, so directly connected the Anker to the lightening cable, charging then resumed. To test things out I then used the genuine Apple brick and that was OK with the lightening cable but not the USB extension cable as well. I then replugged the lightening cable back into the Anker charger and that would no longer work. I tried plugging the lightening cable into my Dell laptop and again the green charging light flashed on then reverted to not charging. Note I can charge from the genuine Apple charger and lightening cable so the device is still usable until the battery dies but I really need to be able to use an extension cable.

It seems like ios 8.4 has changed some parameter (voltage?) required at the lightening socket to allow charging, but it must be outside Apple's own specification as they say you should be able to charge from a PC/Laptop USB socket.

I am in serious difficulty now. My son is disabled with severe learning difficulties and needs the longer lead so he does not drag the mains cable round with him or put undue strain on the lightening cable. The longer lead is also needed so he can use it on long journies in the car to reach the car charger as the batteries don't last a long journey.

Please can I have an urgent fix for the problem?

TIA,

Nick

PS I am not sure which category to post into as I dont see an ios specific category, so if I have used the wrong one, please can you change it?

I'm in the same boat, but I have the original cable that came with my iPad2. No problems until the 8.4 update. Then my battery drained and I went to recharge. It's in a continuous loop of rebooting and will not charge or connect with iTunes. Reset has no effect. Did Apple not test this update????

Apple did test the update and it has nothing to do with your problem.

If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...

Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.

If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod/iPhone and then select the Summary tab. Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod/iPhone. Again, say "yes."

At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod/iPhone. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.

If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here. You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again. Also, read this.

I guess you missed reading the part where the Reset doesn't work and will NOT CONNECT to iTunes. Reiboot app won't break it out of the reboot loop and into Recovery Mode either. It has never been jailbroken, and never had an issue until this update. I had already tried ALL of the above before posting.... including making sure the port was clear/clean of debris.

As far as testing, this is a pretty big problem , this isn't the only thread and I'm not the only one with these issues where we have no workaround.

Wow, you are pretty ornery. As I said in my first post, it won't connect to iTunes, even in Recovery mode. I get the iTunes icon on my iPad, it attempts to connect, iTunes thinks about it a second and returns a connection error, unknown device. Then the reboot lop starts again. Again I cleaned the ports and the cable is good, ie., works with my other IOS devices. Tried the recovery on a macbook and a iMac. So I'll figure out on my own -- always have, which is why I never posted until yesterday after 30 years of using Apple machines being with the Lisa. Evidently posting looking for help is an invitation for abuse.

My experience exactly. My thoughts about the poster exactly too.

My situation got worse... I let my battery go flat and it ceased to turn on (forget recharge). Did yours go dead flat? I suggest the iOS 7 fix for charging to make sure it actually charges. (It's in an earlier post). Don't let it die.

Apple here in India is not going to investigate further (for a number of reasons - one being the stupidity of a cousin that failed to tell me he'd had replaced the screen back in April when I'd lent it to him by someone unauthorised...).

The upshot? The phone is a sitting idle. Hence I'm just waiting to see if it can be brought back to life.

Hello everybody,

I have got the same problem. My iPad 2 is like dead after having updated it with 8.4.one week ago (actually 22% remaining for doing any action before it's really dead). No problem before with the old version. Charging on the local supply is not possible - no reaction, as it wouldn't be any electricity at my place... No connection at all to iTunes too (and no charging either) - no reaction, as I hadn't connected my iPad 2 to my computer.

I have got three genuine cables (about 1 m long) and have tried each of them with my iPad 2. No success.I've tried after that my iPhone and my iPod with the same cables. No charging or connecting problem any more...

I suppose something is going wrong with 8.4 (but it is hard to believe that - I'm used to think that the problem comes from myself ... - Have I forgotten to read any instruction with the updating to 8.4 ? Or have I to buy a new cable after having updated my iPad 2 ? )... If somebody would find any solution... Many thanks for sharing ;-))

If not, I'll call Apple's hotline very soon...

Best wishes !

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.

Before you call Apple, you might wish to get your ducks in a row.

Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight. Do NOT use an iPod/iPhone charger. Do NOT use a computer's USB port. Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear). An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.

I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem. I am stating, however, that we don't yet know. If the above test does, in fact, indicate a problem, read this.

Also, according to Apple:

Use Your iPad Regularly

For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

Many thanks for your very prompt answer, Philly ;-)

I find your explanation useful. Many thanks ;-) I'm waiting now for having the battery of my iPad completely down and I'll try then to charge it. But the present problem isn't indeed a very quick running down of the battery. I'm very satisfied with it (and had already turned off location, parallax and motion as it is stated on the website you've recommended).

I'm not used to charge every weeks for having always 100%. I can usually wait very patiently until 2-3 %, what I mostlydo ;-) And I'm using my iPad regularly.

The problem is that I cannot have any connection between my iPad and my computer (or between my iPad and the local supply). That's not a battery issue, I think, it's only the connection, which doesn't work. It must be an electronic issue, not a physically problem (if not, I would have noticed it for a long time).

I would like to know please, how everybody has been doing the updating to 8.4... My question : Was your iPad connected to the local supply during the updating or not ? Mine was (because I remember it was recommended for completing the updating without any problem) and I cannot since charge or connect my iPad to my computer (it is not recognized). If it's the cause, one can go forward... ;-)

Many thanks for your answers and best wishes ;-)
