iOS 8.4 rear camera freezing

Hi everybody,

Is anyone else having this same issue where the iPhone 5S rear camera freezes or does not respond (showing a black screen) on iOS 8.4.

The camera does not work on any of the other apps that uses the camera, such as Instagram, Whatsapp, and even iMessage.

I have tried switching the phone off and on, resetting the phone (hard reset), clean restore to no avail.

If anyone has successfully solved this issue, please do share it with me.

Thank you.

Regards,

J

I have since 8.4 same problem. If i can use my back cam it looks like that or more worse. But most of time cam freze up!
Same lines i get some times on front cam but not realy that often and i can use it when i turn the cam and restart the app.
My iPhone have also GPS issue (which i fixed already), it come back after i put up a new software on it.
I think 8.4 affekt some devices which were released on some week in Foxcon because it appends only few users.
Apple ignored me at Apple Store and told that they will not replace it becasue i came up there with 3 iPhone replaces which had problems.

I have another apoitment at Store next week. If i don't get replace for a working phone i will get 275€ in 2 or 1 cent coins to replace my phone...

Ok, so after 1 hour via on line support i did the following:

  • Restored the phone back to factory
  • Set it up as new phone,

But no joy.. Was again told it was a hardware issue. I mentioned that you can't say it is a hardware issue until you can put the phone back to as it was before. I.E. running iOS 8.3. Which apparently isn't possible.

They did mention that they check the phones hardware during the upgrade and not before, which seems ridiculous. Surely this should be done prior to apply the upgrade.

I was told that I could take the phone into a store to have it confirmed, so booked the appointment and went into today. Turned up 10 minutes early.

Then waited for another 15 minutes before I was seen.

Then they restored of the phone, meanwhile they went to wait serve other customers and had to wait another 10-15 minutes. Restore done and guess what... It still didn't work, what a surprise. Maybe a little harsh, as they were just confirming I guess. So then was told it was a hardware issue again.. But again I mentioned reverting back to iOS 8.3, same answer not supported.

So catch 22, can't prove its a hardware issue until the revert the software.

So then asked if I anything had been replaced, I mentioned the battery had been replaced. So Apple can't repair it as it was done by a third party and not apple.

There was no testing of the hardware done, as they don't have the facilities in store. Which is a little misleading..

They thought if it was a software issue, there would be more people having the same problem. So I mentioned this thread in both online support and in store.

But nothing, still a hardware issue.

So now stuck with a phone with a camera I can't use.

Anybody else had a reply from apple???

I was hoping that updating to the iOS 9 public beta would have the potential to fix my 5s rear camera issues but NOPE 😟

Like everyone else, tried resetting and a clean restoration but NOTHING! Am starting to think that this is a hardware problem 😕

I did wake up to this issue one morning about 3 weeks ago, didn't drop it or anything. Thou I did replace my cracked screen back in Feb.

My gf has the same problem too (5s as well) and now my young brother, thou he has the new iPhone 6!!

This is very frustrating, but I believe Apple is aware of the problem, but is not owning it. It appears to be widespread. I too tried to update to iOS 9, don't do it btw, a large portion of apps don't support it yet, and it did not fix the camera issue. I wish the wizards of Cupertino would step up and help.

Has anyone gone into an Apple store for help yet??

Its seems that its a connection related problem. (WEIRD)
My girlfriend's Iphone5s had the same trouble, she reinstalled from scratch and everything was working properly until today.
Camera fails again.

We tried switch on and off the Airplane mode to force restart the connection and, magic. It works!

Thanks @chrishoo for the key clue

switching on then off airplane mode only works if there is internet connection - basically I have moved to an area with better internet connection and im forcing the phone to reconnect to the mobile network. I'm glad this has worked for some.

One other thing, is everyone here using icloud photo? Just wondering if we all swich off icloud photo for the intances where there is poor internet connection that might solve the problem? (Of course switchint it back on when there is good connection - backing up is important!)

I'm also having this kind of issue.. this is really frustrating.. I have done all the necessary recommendations such as turn off, reinstall, restore iphone, etc. Seems that the only way to fix this issue by downgrading our ios back to 8.3. The weirdest thing is that this case doesnt apply to everyone, only the lucky people like us, in this thread. Apple, please fix this immediately.
