iTunes keeps interrupting when working offline

iTunes keeps popping up the dialog window saying "We could not complete your iTunes Store request" every once in a while when I'm working offline. Apparently iTunes is doing something in the background periodically, and shows this error everytime it fails to connect. I don't mind iTunes doing its things in the background, but I don't think it's good UI design to bother the user about failed connection requests done automatically by a background app.

Is there a way to disable this feature?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

It does this even when signed out of the iTunes Store.

So e**ing annoying. The only solution I've found is to abstain from itunes as much as possible. I've found the program quodLibet great. Reminiscent of how great itunes used to be.
