tthe AppStore is requiring to verify payment. For free apps! When I attempt to, my cards are denied. Why do I need to do this? How can I stop this process? I'm not making purchases.

To me this is discrimination. If we can't afford to buy an app or an in app purchases that should have no bearing on our ability to have access to fee apps or free in app services. Why is this such a problem for this huge company to fix. It has been a problem for as long as I have owned an iPhone and that is almost a decade. Yes I was late coming to the party but tgat doesn't make my issue any less real. Fix this please. Don't ask for for credit card info for free apps and fee in app purchases. Seems like an easy answer to me

I'm not sure why Apple verified this as it does not reflect its security practices at all. To the contrary, Apple allows anyone to add someone else's closed credit card to their account and make thousands in purchases, even for in store pick up by appointing themself as the 3rd party. Even worse, Apple allows the unauthorized purchaser to add items in store to the credit card, with a completely different name, Apple ID, phone number and address and bills the cardholder for those purchases too.

I can post my credit card support document if this sounds crazy, but it is unfortunately all true.

Absolutely; please post the Apple support document which allows 3rd parties to make purchases at the Apple store under someone else's name. I certainly couldn't find that here:

IM upset, too. My credit card came out " please verify" and won't be working again until Friday.I even put a 50 iTunes card on it and still won't work.I was trying to watch a past season I bought over a year ago ( and PAID in full) and iTunes, apple or whomever runs the show, would not let me see anything. If I have an outstanding balance( which is first time) why don't they block on whatever wasn't paid, but not block you off for all purchases you have done the past 6 years! I realized how I was " run" by iTunes and don't like it .from now on ( starting next fall because I bought the tv shows) I will record and not buy series from iTunes. They hold you hostage on what I can watch and not,and that is a bad feeling.

GOod-bye iTunes

Here is the answer. There are 2 issues. First check your settings in apps and make sure there is check in the box requiring verification for all purchases, There should only be a check in the box requiring one after 15 min.

Re: your gift card, to the extent that Apple does except the product, for it to work online you need to register it so that it will be associated with a zip code. Th I instructions are on the box. Hang on to the card, in case you need to make a return. Also, Apple may place a large preauthorization on your card if you place an order and charge the card before the item ships. This is normal but a prepaid card is not the best product for this kind of purchase.

Also, Apple treats all folks who do not provide an acceptable form of payment at the point of sale exactly the same way.
