iPod Classic 160GB won't sync to latest version of iTunes

I've got a really old (at least 10 years) iPod Classic. It's been fantastic. That is until the latest iTunes iteration was released (as of today iTunes 12.2.1.16.

When I plug in the iPod to my computer, it will open iTunes, iTunes says it's syncing and then it says it's done and nothing happens.

I've tried rebooting both the computer and the iPod, reinstalling iTunes, restoring factory settings on the iPod (which erased everything on it) and trying an older version of iTunes all to no avail.

Has anyone else had this issue and been able to solve it?

Thanks so much for your good information. Fortunately, I don't have a lot of "Other" space on my iPod...just my music. I called Apple Tech Support, they made a case, and I submitted a feedback form. They said they have had other people with this problem, so perhaps they'll fix the bug. They even told me they'd walk me through to get the music back, even though I have no Apple Care Plan with the iPod (it's an old Classic). I guess as long as I still have my music in the library (and two hard drives with the library backed up) I can always get it back on the iPod. But it is aggrevating. Thank so much. You certainly have helped a lot of folks like me on this site.

Had the same issue trying to sync with my pc, contacted apple support who tried unsuccessfully to resolve. I had two iPod classics and both would not sync kept getting the message 'disc cannot be found'. I then connected one to my laptop and opened iTunes which recognised my iPod I then enable shared disc usage, synced reconnected to the pc and it was working again like new. tried the same with my second iPod and it also worked.

I have been reading about this problem (iPod 160gb classic not syncing after a restore) and have tried most of the solutions posted. Here's what finally worked for me:

1) Plugged in the iPod to my computer and that brought up iTunes.

2) Once I could see the device in the left menu, I clicked on the musical note to bring up the list of my music saved in iTunes (mine was over 10,000 songs).

3) I selected all 10,000+ songs, and then just dragged them into the device (visible on the left menu). It took about an hour, but they all copied.

4) The Playlists didn't copy, so I had to drag them in as well, one by one, from the bottom left window up to the device.

I'm sure now that I will have to "sync" by hand each time I add a song, cd, or playlist to my iTunes on my macbook, but that's a small price to pay, since yesterday I was convinced I was going to have to throw away my beloved iPod classic.

Here's a Jing video to show what I did: http://screencast.com/t/eGGLwc37c

Hope this helps!

I spent the past two days trying to get my IPod classic to sync; I finally decided this morning to search for a solution, sadly I am seeing so many with the same problem.

I've got so much new content purchased from I-Tunes on my (Mac Book Pro) that cannot be synced to my (Apple purchased) I-Pod; where are you Apple and your motivation to help those supporting your product?

Hope there is a solution soon ... (Apple)

I have two friends with classics and both having the same problem syncing to itunes 12. I have a classic but am still running 11 on that computer for this very reason. I am afraid it won't work. I am a conspiracy theorist, so I believe it's a backwards way to make you buy new hardware. I just bought a new iPod touch and it forced me to upgrade to 12. So the new one wouldn't sync with 11, and the old classic won't sync with 12. Right now I am syncing older devices to a pc with 11 and newer devices to a laptop running 12. I am already planning the scheduled retirement of the classic. Bottom line, is ... we are screwed.

The only idea that comes to mind is that hopefully you're not running a computer with Windows Vista. Anyone with Vista who managed to ram through v12.3 onto their computer found themselves in a world of hurt. IMO, Apple did a pretty poor job letting everyone know about dropping support for Vista starting with v12.3; so much so, that the boards here immediately started filling up with rather irate posts to that effect. I almost got snookered into upgrading, but caught myself in time. (I've since bought a new laptop with Windows 10, so it's a moot point for me.) Basically, that's when I saw an exponential increase in posts here, eventually convincing me to register (although it was for a different issue, initially.)

The most recent (and likely final) release of iTunes that supports Windows XP 32-bit and Windows Vista 32/64 was issued September 2015. It includes support for iOS 9, though not Apple Music, nor the new iPhone SE. Apple Software Update won't necessarily fetch it for you and may claim you are up to date when you are not. The iTunes download page may not offer it to you either.

Right-click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator.

See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates if you have any problems with the installation.

Each build of iTunes supports all models of Apple devices that were available prior to its release. If you're unable to sync a device with iTunes then reinstall if there is reason to think there could be an issue with iTunes itself. Antivirus, firewall and other third party software/drivers can affect iTunes ability to talk to the device. Putting it in disk mode may help. Try alternate cables and ports, or check connectivity on a different computer. If iTunes sees the device but the results of syncing are erratic see Re: Corrupt iPod classic.
