Constant popup "join Wifi-network"

I suddenly am interrupted every five minutes by a popup that says on the window frame "join (name of wifi network here)".

In the window is the message

"<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>Success</TITLE></HEAD><BODY>Success</BODY></HTML>"

What is wrong with my wifi network that I get this?

How can I make it go away?

Thanks!

Go into [Hard Drive] -> System -> Library -> CoreServices

Find "Captive Network Assistant" and rename it to "XCaptive Network Assistant".

Voila! No longer a problem.

This is at least a temporary fix to resolve the issue until Apple fixes the problem at their end (who knows how long that is going to take).

In terms of overall impact, it will only affect people on corporate networks or airports that need to input corporate usernames/passwords. If you're just connecting to your wireless at home it won't have any impact.

This is one of the reasons I suggest also not "deleting" the file and instead "renaming" it to get it out of the way, temporarily whilst Apple fix the issue so you can then rename it again after they fix what they need to.

At least it won't get in your way every five minutes whilst trying to surf the net.

Anyway, hopefully that helps everyone.

this thing happened to me just this morning and i was desperately looking for a solution for this!

i dont know how but this worked for me

> open System Preference - Network - then delete ALL network list you have (including the network u use right now; you can see it on the left box, just click the "-" sign below) - then after that try to connect to your network or wifi you have at home again and see if something pops out again (mine stopped already. i restarted my macbook just to see if it really worked then yeahhh it worked. didnt have any pop outs or whatever)

FIXED.

It looks like everything is back to normal.

The page that our WiFi networks contact at log-in had had damaged code in it.

It's similar to bad HTML. If you made an html mistake, you might have the code displayed on your website instead of doing something.

The same thing happened here. The HTML code from that page was displayed on our computers instead simply communicating.

Since Apple seems to have fixed it, no more pop-ups.

It looks like a mess-up at Apple's end. For a start-off someone has pasted the code into a web page creation program as if it was content instead of into a code editor. I don't know whether this is why the page is suddenly appearing - it's affecting a lot of people on iOS and Mavericks though I don't see it on Snow Leopard (I did when I changed my Maverics iMac to use Wifi instead of Ethernet).

The page is apparently checked when a wifi connection is successful, but it shouldn't actually appear. Possibly the checking process expects to see the word 'Success' as the first text, which at present it isn't. It looks like something only Apple can sort out.

The box appears as though it could be due to some browser cached item; or

maybe something in Safari. If you force quit Safari and then restart it with the

extensions-off (hold shift key on launch of Safari) that may help.

I've not had that kind of issue; others have and the source(s) may relate to

adware or some thing related to popups, and accidentally downloading

unwanted or unintended software, or just extensions in the browser itself.

The following support link covers several possibilities to your stated issue:

• Stop pop-up ads and adware in Safari - Apple Support

You may need to look further for other kinds of possibly related bits. And

never expect a new OS X to fix an underlying problem that predated it.

Sometimes the cause will be moved along with your old user account.

You could try to see what Console logs suggest, or look at the highlights

in an etrecheck report. Not sure if something such as adwaremedic helps.

Regarding the original topic of this thread, this of course -- isn't about that. LOL 🙂

HI All,

Apple uses a method of pinging back a 'hidden' web page when ever you attempt to use wifi. This is used to check for login screens on wifi portals, but it appears to be broken at the moment.

The server is passing back badly formatted HTML that is then displayed on the screen modally (in front of everything and in focus) which interrupts what ever you are doing if connected to wifi.

At the moment the ONLY work around appears to be not to use wifi (this is obviously unacceptable)

Seems like a similar thing has happened before. Found this from 2012, about wi-fi connection problems:

Re: Am I the only one having ios 6 ipad 3 wi-fi issues in response to phantomette1

Here is what is going on. Ever since iOS 4(?) there has been a feature where if you connect to a WiFi network it will try to ping this site:http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html

If it is a success then it lets you connect, if it is not a success the phone trys to bring up what would be a Login page for corporate wifi networks. Example, public access points that have a login page, etc.

It seems that some moron at Apple deleted the file located at http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html and that is why it is not working.

This is not an iOS 6 issue but rather a problem with Apple's website.

Looks like this is common problem.

I did a restart, which still gave me the pop-up, but at least they disappeared after the first log-in.

The problem with this pop-ups is that they interrupt wi-fi - while the pop-up is on the screen, you cannot go on the internet.

Only if you click it away internet works again.

Looks like a virus or malware.
