Constant popup "join Wifi-network"

I suddenly am interrupted every five minutes by a popup that says on the window frame "join (name of wifi network here)".

In the window is the message

"<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>Success</TITLE></HEAD><BODY>Success</BODY></HTML>"

What is wrong with my wifi network that I get this?

How can I make it go away?

Thanks!

Go into [Hard Drive] -> System -> Library -> CoreServices

Find "Captive Network Assistant" and rename it to "XCaptive Network Assistant".

Voila! No longer a problem.

This is at least a temporary fix to resolve the issue until Apple fixes the problem at their end (who knows how long that is going to take).

In terms of overall impact, it will only affect people on corporate networks or airports that need to input corporate usernames/passwords. If you're just connecting to your wireless at home it won't have any impact.

This is one of the reasons I suggest also not "deleting" the file and instead "renaming" it to get it out of the way, temporarily whilst Apple fix the issue so you can then rename it again after they fix what they need to.

At least it won't get in your way every five minutes whilst trying to surf the net.

Anyway, hopefully that helps everyone.

I have tried restarting the computer, router and the wireless network hub. Still got the pop up. It is affecting my iMac (10.9.5) but not my iPhone 5s (8.3) or my iPad mini (8.3). I also see it isn't local to Apple products, Android seem to be having problems too.

Not that it has solved anything, but I have simply put the offending window into the corner out of the way, the computer seems to be working fine, internet works, email works and so on. Running a virus scan now, but I don't think it will be that.

My guess as some hacker has done something to the web. But then what do I know?

Just another data point: This started happening to me too today. I am running Mavericks (10.9.5) and I haven't updated ANY software on my machine in over a week so I know it is nothing to do with any update. Someone, somewhere, screwed up badly... and hopefully whoever it was will fix their mistake. In the meantime, the solution for Macs posted in this thread (renaming that file) seems to work - at least for me. Many thanks to Wyrmfire for finding and posting the fix!!

I just got this pop up message too.

Just a blank window with <HTML><HEAD><TITLE>Success</TITLE></HEAD><BODY>Success</BODY></HTML> and the bottom URL http://pple.com/library/test/success.html

I've been able to reproduce this on 2 different macs (work and personal) that don't share much in common. Both on my home wifi, which I've never had a problem with before.

I think this might be related to testing a "captive portal" like mentioned at https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/45418/how-to-automatically-login-to-ca ptive-portals-on-os-x but I haven't configured or run anything unusual lately.

Suggestions to stop this join a network popup / captive portal that occurs every couple of minutes or so?

This seems like malware since interfering with communications on the computer and cannot run anything on the machine without interruption every 5 minutes. All running games are also interrupted and this is extremely annoying. However running McAffe LiveSafe 2015 on full scan on 2 year old iMac has not found anything yet though it only started a few hours ago. Apple must be getting lots of hits on the url if every internet connected device has this problem so perhaps something will be done in due course. I'm running mavericks and usually update the security updates but not updated iTunes recently. Not running an Airport base station but Apple TV occasionally used (been switched off last 12 hours). An iPod classic 160Gb was connected for synching music 15 hours ago but no other iOS devices (including iPhone) connected for several weeks. The only device kept switched on is a BT Infinity router. I'm also checking PCs for malware but nothing found. Could this be a zero day problem?
