Constant popup "join Wifi-network"

I suddenly am interrupted every five minutes by a popup that says on the window frame "join (name of wifi network here)".

In the window is the message

"<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>Success</TITLE></HEAD><BODY>Success</BODY></HTML>"

What is wrong with my wifi network that I get this?

How can I make it go away?

Thanks!

Go into [Hard Drive] -> System -> Library -> CoreServices

Find "Captive Network Assistant" and rename it to "XCaptive Network Assistant".

Voila! No longer a problem.

This is at least a temporary fix to resolve the issue until Apple fixes the problem at their end (who knows how long that is going to take).

In terms of overall impact, it will only affect people on corporate networks or airports that need to input corporate usernames/passwords. If you're just connecting to your wireless at home it won't have any impact.

This is one of the reasons I suggest also not "deleting" the file and instead "renaming" it to get it out of the way, temporarily whilst Apple fix the issue so you can then rename it again after they fix what they need to.

At least it won't get in your way every five minutes whilst trying to surf the net.

Anyway, hopefully that helps everyone.

Same problem here with OSX 10.9.5 since this morning. I do not have an airport, just another brand of a wireless router. Apple does not seem to have deleted this file on their site, but maybe permissions or something else changed?

Since no one did any update and a lot of people are getting this now, I would suspect it to be a fault at Apple's end. Too bad we all have interference because of this... Very annoying this popup is coming back every 5 minutes.

Same here in Barcelona, Spain. Last night everything working fine, this morning the popup sows up every 5 minutes and I lose connection. I'm on a 11-inch MacBook Air Mid 2013. No Airport Station, but a Linksys WRT-1900ac and on a 5Ghz network. Restarting and erasing internet locations didn't solve the issue...

I will try later on with a 13-inch Retina Macbook Pro and post results. This is really weird.

At home both imacs at the same time started showing this, after connecting and disconnecting..it happened about 2-3 hours ago and still does that. I am amazed how quickly I am reading in google about this problem. Ill keep up with it. I tried in both computers to disable the auto join, but didnt do. Reset the modem, didnt do either*(there you go, it just popped up again, freeeaaaakyyy!!!) Since it opens with everything else closed and in the two computers. Help! User uploaded file

Same thing. All sorts of weird wifi issues actually for last couple days, but not sure if they were coincidental with odd issues with my ISP too. But as for this wifi network popup thing, it definitely appears like one of these security or EFI updates has made things screwy for us 10.9.5 users. Hopefully Apple already knows and is working on a fix. 😠😟 I wonder if they released these updates knowing this would happen....

Same problem here on a Macbook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.5 connected to Apple Airport WiFi on 5Gz channel. Odd is however that we have two MacBooks running the same OS version, connected to the same router. One is getting the screen every five minutes and the other is not.

However if I try to check the network prefs on the machine that doesn't have the problem, it has difficulty loading the tabs (TCP, DNS etc.) on the "advanced" dialogue.

No, it just affects the corporate login system where the popup is used by the corporate network to display the username/password initially when first connecting in.

If you're just on a standard wifi network it won't cause you any problems.

Following Apple fixing the issue and if you use this type of network at work, you can just rename the file back to its original name anyway, which is why I suggested renaming instead of deleting the file (in case you need it).

Same problem on my MacBook Pro, OS X Version 10.9.5. Nothing has changed on this machine, the problem (pop up screen) started this morning. My iPad mini and iPhone also seem to be experiencing problems keeping the wifi connection but my Microsoft laptop is working OK.
I wonder if this is an attack/hack on Apple or if it is "agile" or "rapid" development (i.e. cut corners during development and let the users do the testing).

You're a life saver @Wyrmfire. This seems to have happened today after I installed the 2015-001 EFI Update this AM. Before that - everything was working just fine.

Thought I was going to have to try and force Yosemite on my poor 2012 Macbook Air to fix. Hope they come up with a longer term solution tho - rather than renaming that file. I have yet to test if my VPN connection to my office in the US will work, as I'm currently in the UK.

Out of interest - I wonder if this is just hitting UK users?

Edit to add:

Tested VPN and RDP into my Arizona based computer from UK. Seems to be working just fine. Yayyy
