I don't know about the control (never looked into it) but, with Verizon, it's REAL easy to monitor via web or iPhone app. I can look at total usage and, if I wish, I can look at separate stats for each phone on the plan.

That's good to know. I have a grand-daughter that's almost at an appropriate age for a phone but, of course, her parents are concerned.

The phone while preferentially use WiFi if it that is turned on. HOWEVER. The phone will revert to cellular data when the phone goes to sleep (screen goes dark). It's good to review the settings I mentioned so that, when she is not on WiFi, she's not using data for things that aren't important.

SMS and calls okay without data.

iMessage can use your data plan even when cellular/mobile data is disabled. Big fail here by Apple that you can't restrict iMessage to wifi only.
