Back of Watch fell off

This morning when I took my Apple Watch (sports version) off the charger, the back stayed on the charger while the rest of the watch came off, connected to the back through a small ribbon cable. The back just fell off.

I use the watch pretty normally - wear it during the day, charge at night, wear it running for an hour 3 times a week. Don't wear it in the shower or anything like that.

I can place the back on the watch but it eventually just falls off again, and I'm sure the moisture seal is shot.

Looks like the back is just glued on and prone to falling off. Even my relatively ugly Pebble Watch used screws and a rubber gasket. Apple just squirted a bit of glue around the edge, pushed the back on, and called it a day.

Final follow-up to my original post. Apple ended up replacing the broken watch with a new one, just arrived today. The guy helping me at the Apple Store said he'd never had someone come in with the back falling off, but he had seen it mentioned in an internal service bulletin.

So, if the back of your watch falls in, take it to an Apple Store or send it in. They know about the problem.

And that's the end of my story - unless the back falls off again :-)

(N.B. I still think gluing in a part that's under a fair amount of stress and heat is a strange decision, but I concede the point that I'm not a glue expert. Hope the number of us that had this problem stays small!)

What about those who don't live close to an Apple service center and live in a country where there is no Apple support? How are we going to "use it" then? Why not make a reliable product in first place and save us a headache? A backplate which comes off is a serious quality issue. Not everyone is rich and not everyone can just go to an Apple service center and "use it" as you put it.

Well said man. These fanboys are attacking those customers who are complaining about buying a defective product which they paid with their hard earned cash. If the fan boys feel so insecure about their fav company then they should buy a replacement for everyone who has bought a defective product if they care so much about the company's reputation.

For the rest of us who are not fan boys, we need to push more for better product design which already costs so much which fails within couple of months.

If you have to resort to name calling you have already lost your argument.

Nobody here is saying that some Apple products have failed. No one is saying that things can happen during manufacturing that will cause a product to fail. That is what warranties are for. Apple has had previous manufacturing issues with products and have done recalls and warranty extensions. All we have said is using adhesives in 21st century is not in and of itself a design flaw.

It ***** to be statistic but products do fail and that doesn't necessarily mean their is a design flaw. If you think you can do better find a company that has a 0% failure rate and purchase from them. Please list here what company that would be.

"The Space Shuttle has a heat shield held on with glue. Clearly this is not your mama's glue."

Yeah your right, I don't remember hearing about your mama's glue coming lose on the space shuttle and the space shuttle heat shield coming off maybe you should sell some to apple.

This post is asking others if they had a problem with the back coming off of the apple watch, If you don't own the watch (Csound1) there should be no comment and the original post asked if anyone else had this problem, if you did not have this problem no comment is necessary.

There was never an argument, just a reply, so what did I lose?

"For starters credibility"?

when the reply does not corespond to the general question it is not needed and I did not know I was trying to be credible to anyone, i don't think Csound1 needs you for backup he can defend him or herself, so back off sidekick, I'm here to see how many more has had this problem, not to read these un related comments from you two. the space shuttle uses glue, who cares I did not buy a space shuttle I bought an apple watch and no wearable watch should have the back glued on.

Once again, you seem to have failed to grasp concept that you don't get to decide who posts in this thread.

I have a great deal of respect for Csound1 so, being called their sidekick is hardly an insult.

Thanks Meg, I appreciate that. And as for the man with the attitude? c'est la vie.

-nevsf,

As unfortunate as it is, I am SO happy to have found your post about the back of your Apple Watch falling off. I went to charge mine last night and body of the watch just fell forward, leaving the magnetic battery on the charger, connected by the ribbon. I was absolutely shocked and cranky, seeing as I paid $649 for the Stainless Steel 38mm watch, but I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I made a Genius Bar appointment for today and I was hoping that they would just replace it, now the Watch is available in Apple Stores and this is CLEARLY a hardware defect, but seeing as your post was just July 19th, maybe not. Thoughts?

I sent my watch in for repair for just this problem. Got an email today saying I abused my watch and would be charged for the repair. My watch has not been abused ever! Never in water, always taken good care of it. Just took it off charger and it came apart. It really burns me that they are charging to fix it! It's plain and simple a defect. I'll call them in the morning and hopefully get some satisfaction.

It's disturbing to read the multiple reports from people who have had it happen more than once, even with replacement watches. This is going to be a pretty embarrassing problem for Apple when the backs start falling off of people's watches a few months after the warranties expire. I envision a super-glue fix in my future, once my warranty is done.

It definitely affects my thinking about whether to keep using the watch and whether to upgrade to the Apple Watch 2 or 3 or whatever. I no longer feel that I can trust it to be water resistant enough to use it outside during sports like cycling. But that's one of the main use cases for me, so if I can't use it for that then why bother with it at all? I didn't buy the thing to pay for coffee with my wrist.
