iTunes Doesn't Recognize iPod (5th Gen Video 30Gig)

My iPod was working fine until I deleted songs that were all duplicated (using Anapod) and then discovered there weren't any songs left on my iPod.

I synced it back to iTunes and this messege popped out
"iTunes cannot read the contents of your iPod..etc etc" The gist of the message was that iTunes couldn't read my iPod and after I clicked the OK tab, the page sort of freezes and I can't click restore, so, its not possible for me to restore my iPod!

I've tried everything! Re-installing iTunes; disconnecting USB ports; resetting iPod nothing works.

AND

I have 15 video podcasts. in the Settings area, it says i have 15 but when I go to the menu section in the podcasts, i have 30! all duplicated!

so..

1. how do I restore my iPod
2. how do i get rid of the duplicates?

I had that problem where I would connect my iPod and nothing would happen until about a minute later when a box titled 'Autoplay' would appear, and the only way to stop it was to Ctrl, Alt and Delete it and end iTunes. I found the reason was that for some reason the iPod had become uncompatible with a USB port on my computer (this may be caused by a problem within iTunes). I now use a different USB port, and have even bought a USB hub in case that USB port becomes unusable, and my iPod has loaded and been synced as it normally should do.

Hope it helps everyone with this problem; I know I got really frustrated with my iTunes/iPod when it just wouldn't work no matter what I did!

I have just bought an Ipod Nano 2 Gb and have downloaded Itunes 7.1. It registered my Ipod when I first plugged it into my computer and downloaded the music I had on my computer but since then Itunes has not registered the device so I can't do anything with the Ipod, download or upload anything because the divice is not visible in Itunes. I have gone through all the five steps of trying to correct it but nothing works. What is the answer? At the moment I have an Ipod Nano with 87 songs on it which I cant erase or replace! I have also gone through the same procedure on my laptop with the same result! What is the answer?

I've read the whole thread and it seems to be a consensus - there is a problem with iTunes 7. Has anyone got a solution though as I seem to share frustrated times with the others, ipod not recognised when plugged in and showing Do Not Disconnect sign, needing to be reset when unplugged.

Any advice or fixes welcomed as I'm running out of hair!!

I'll agree Podpet, no resolution to date.

I just looked on my laptop with WinXP Pro and have iTunes vers. 6.0.1.3. Started iTunes 6.0.1.3 and it immediately found my iPod 5G/30GB. Loading tunes from my CDs and will download to my iPod again.

I tried most everything mentioned in this thread:

- 5R's
- update to iTunes 7.1.1.x
- de-installed/re-installed
- edited REGISTRY keys
- used msconfig
- switched terminal services from manual to auto and back

and STILL no success. I'd like to find a 6.0.x.x version of iTunes for my other computer as well.

What's the report from APPLE on this bug fix??

I don't have a solution for the problem yet but I narrowed it down a little. When I'm copying files to my ipod once every few songs it fails saying. "Writing to ipod failed" or something along those lines. After that if I am to disconnect the ipod it will not be able to be read by the itunes on my computer. However when I plug it in to my other computer, also wiht an itunes installation it is recognized just fine. Hence, the problem lies with itunes. Even though Itunes tells you that there's a problem with the ipod. I've tried unsinstalling itunes on the original computer and even wiping all of the registry keys that have any mention of ipod or itunes and then reinstalling but it still did not help. I'm pretty stumped as to how to proceed from here but one thing is for sure if you loaded like 60Gb of music onto your ipod and it gets this problem do not restore it because the problem is not with your ipod but with itunes.

Are you plugging your iPod through a hub, or directly to your computer? Are you plugging the iPod into the front or back of your computer? (If your computer is home built, this is usually a huge issue) What kind of other devices do you have plugged into your computer? i.e. HP Printers, PDA's, Scanners, ETC. Do you have 3rd party software like Adobe Photo Express/Albums? Does the issue still happen if you change the drive letter for your iPod?

It's plugged in through a port at the back. I've been meaning to try plugging it in through a separately powered hub but I can't find the darn thing in my house. 🙂 I have a feeling that lack of power from the USB port could be the original reason the read/writes are failing. I did put the computer together myself but I've put together probably at least a hundred computers as I used to work for an IT department a few years back. When you say 3rd party software do you mean software that's related to the ipod? I think my printer's on a parallel port not USB. Other than that I don't have any other periferals. I should try plugging it into different USB ports and see if it makes a difference. I would be pretty surprised though.
