Pentax camera .mov file has no audio in quicktime 10.4 since I upgraded the OS recently.

I have a Pentax camera that records movies in .mov format H.264 and since i upgraded, there is no audio when i play the files.

There doesn't appear to be an audio track when i view inspector.

When I open the file in VLC the audio is PCM 16 Little endian 32 Khz.

They used to play fine at one time.

Any ideas why i have no audio? They fail to play even on the iPhone.

(1) If the Pentax videos you record have sound when you play them back on the camera, there may be something wrong with the cable connections or with the settings or way you are downloading. Try a different cable or playing back on a different Mac.

(2) If the Pentax videos you record DO NOT have sound when you play them back on the camera, there may be something wrong with the camera. Follow the camera's manual instructions to Troubleshoot it or have someone check it for you.

(3) Try making a short QuickTimeX Player video with sound on your Mac. If sound does not play back on the Mac when you play the test video you just recorded, check your  > System Preferences... > Sound > Output settings to ensure that your Volume and sound output device settings are configured correctly.

(4) If you need more suggestions, tell us the results of the above three checks as well as specific info on which Pentax and Mac you are using. We will try to offer specific suggestions based on your additional details.

Mac OSX 10.10.4

Seems link someone else had this issue. Just trying to figure out how to resolve this

Files only play in QT X and/or QL under the most current operating systems (i.e., Mac OS X v10.9 and v10.10) if, and only if, three conditions are met.

  1. The file container must be "natively" QTX/QL compatible,
  2. The audio and/or video codec(s) must be "natively" QTX/QL compatible, and
  3. The software is programmed to recognize/play this particular file container/code combination.

In this case the MOV file container and the H.264/LPCM codecs are compatible but the software (in my case v10.4) is not programmed to play the H.264/LPCM MOV combination.

As to resolving the problem, there are many possible solutions. You could, of course,

  1. File a feedback report and wait to see if a significant enough number of fellow users complain about this issue to get Apple QT technicians to re-program the player,
  2. You could use an alternative player like QT 7 or VLC,
  3. You could use any free or commercial FFmpeg based conversion app to transcode the entire file to any QTX/QL "natively" compatible format, or
  4. If you have QT 7 "Pro" available, you could use the "Movie to MP4" Export menu option to pass through your original H.264 video while transcoding the 16-bit 32 KHz, 512 Kbps PCM audio to something like a 32 KHz, 64 Kbps AAC. This workflow retains the original video quality and reduces the size of the AAC audio track making the resulting MP4 file immediately compatible with all MPEG-4 AVC Baseline@L4.1 capable players—including QTX/QL.

ADDED:

Since you did not upload a sample Pentax WG-2 file for testing, I examined and tested a sample H.264/PCM MOV file ("pentax_optio_wg2_01") as upload to a camera review web site in the UK. Can upload the original sample file and H.264/AAC MP4 QT 7 Pro workflow file for comparison if needed.

It appears that the correct thing to do is file a report and hope for the best.

This is what you would have to do if you want the files to eventually play in any QT X/QL based OS/IOS app. The problem is that this may take some time and there is no guarantee that Apple will ever make the change.

Either that or I need to export hundreds of videos and reimport to iPhoto and then wait for them to sync with iCloud. Annoying to say the least.

As always, this is a matter of personal choice. Frankly, when I purchased similar "sport" and "action" camcorders, I selected devices that recorded AV content in formats that were already QTX/QL compatible to avoid these problems.

BTW I tested pentax_optio_wg2_01 that i found on the net and it's audio doesn't play in QTX or quicklook either.

Correct. It is in the same format (H.264/PCM MOV) and recorded on the same model camera as the file you specified in your original post and, therefore, has the same playback problem. (I.e., I needed to examine and test the same type of file to diagnose your problem.) As previously noted QTX/QL (and any OS/IOS app based on QTX/QL like iTunes, GarageBand, etc.) is not programmed to attempt to playback this content combination even though it is capable of doing so. The problem is not that these apps can't play the content but rather they are not being allowed to do so. This is the same type of problem that was experienced by "Pro" codec users when QT X v10.3 was initially released—i.e., the programmers "forgot" to program the AVFoundation to recognize and use the the "Pro" codecs when used in video files and had to issue an immediate software update. Since H.264/PCM MOV is not a a very common combination, somebody dropped the proverbial ball by not including it in the search tree. (I.e., PCM is normally used with "Pro" video codecs like Apple ProRes in the MOV file container while H.264 is normally used with AAC audio in MOV, MP4, or M4V file containers.)

It does play in QT7 though..

So should your files. If they don't, then you may have additional issues here.

Since they fail to play in the photo's app on the iPhone, there is no way to play them back correctly.

The "wg2" test file played fine for me on my iPhone 5s in the VLC mobile app when downloaded—i.e., it didn't stream well—if you have a way to get the original, unmodified file loaded into the VLC mobile app. (I loaded the file to my personal WD MyCloud EX-4 RAID which can be accessed directly by the mobile VLC app on my iPhone as I didn't see a way to move the file directly from the Photos app iCloud area to the VLC app area on the iPhone.) In any case, I screen captured the VLC playback test on my iPhone using QT X v10.4. Here's the link if you wish to review it:

(NOTE: This demo video will be deleted when I need to reclaim additional file space on my personal server.)
