It appears that the correct thing to do is file a report and hope for the best.
This is what you would have to do if you want the files to eventually play in any QT X/QL based OS/IOS app. The problem is that this may take some time and there is no guarantee that Apple will ever make the change.
Either that or I need to export hundreds of videos and reimport to iPhoto and then wait for them to sync with iCloud. Annoying to say the least.
As always, this is a matter of personal choice. Frankly, when I purchased similar "sport" and "action" camcorders, I selected devices that recorded AV content in formats that were already QTX/QL compatible to avoid these problems.
BTW I tested pentax_optio_wg2_01 that i found on the net and it's audio doesn't play in QTX or quicklook either.
Correct. It is in the same format (H.264/PCM MOV) and recorded on the same model camera as the file you specified in your original post and, therefore, has the same playback problem. (I.e., I needed to examine and test the same type of file to diagnose your problem.) As previously noted QTX/QL (and any OS/IOS app based on QTX/QL like iTunes, GarageBand, etc.) is not programmed to attempt to playback this content combination even though it is capable of doing so. The problem is not that these apps can't play the content but rather they are not being allowed to do so. This is the same type of problem that was experienced by "Pro" codec users when QT X v10.3 was initially released—i.e., the programmers "forgot" to program the AVFoundation to recognize and use the the "Pro" codecs when used in video files and had to issue an immediate software update. Since H.264/PCM MOV is not a a very common combination, somebody dropped the proverbial ball by not including it in the search tree. (I.e., PCM is normally used with "Pro" video codecs like Apple ProRes in the MOV file container while H.264 is normally used with AAC audio in MOV, MP4, or M4V file containers.)
It does play in QT7 though..
So should your files. If they don't, then you may have additional issues here.
Since they fail to play in the photo's app on the iPhone, there is no way to play them back correctly.
The "wg2" test file played fine for me on my iPhone 5s in the VLC mobile app when downloaded—i.e., it didn't stream well—if you have a way to get the original, unmodified file loaded into the VLC mobile app. (I loaded the file to my personal WD MyCloud EX-4 RAID which can be accessed directly by the mobile VLC app on my iPhone as I didn't see a way to move the file directly from the Photos app iCloud area to the VLC app area on the iPhone.) In any case, I screen captured the VLC playback test on my iPhone using QT X v10.4. Here's the link if you wish to review it:
