iPhoto to Photos: duplicate library

Evidently some/many have found that Photos actually did duplicate the iPhoto library, rather than only fixing a hard reference. See http://9to5mac.com/2015/05/07/how-to-shrink-mac-photo-library-delete-duplicates/. This is my experience.

Actually, I gave the wrong information. iPhoto IS in my purchases, and there's an "open" button, but clicking on it results in nothing - no action, no message.

My situation here with iPhoto and versions is aptly covered here: Updated to 10.10.3 and now iPhoto won't open

If you are seeing an "Open" button at the AppStore, there is an iPhoto version somewhere on your Mac. Perhaps on a backup drive. You have to remove each and every older iPhoto version to the Trash bin, so Spotlight does not see it as installed. It is not necessary to empty the Trash. Disconnect all external drives. And search with Spotlight for additional iPhoto applications.

Already suggested and very rudely rejected

And did you drag the iPhoto Application to the trash (do not empty until later) and look in the app store?

Hard to help rude people who refuse to answer simple questions like

Which version of iPhoto do you have?

Good Luck with them

Version is 9.6.

If all fails you can force this version to open in MacOS X 10.10.4, to empty your iPhoto Trash, but since you are seeing an "Open" button at the App Store move iPhoto to the Trash, restart the App Store and try to update to iPhoto 9.6.1 this way.

Let us know, if the installation works.

When you launch the updated iPhoto you will see an alert, that the iPhoto Library has been migrated. Click the "Open iPhoto" button in the alert panel.

Larry, on léonie's cue, thanks for the dragging old app to trash idea.

I think I now understand why and where you took offence, when I said that another thread "aptly covered" my situation. I was not at all referring to your response -- that ended up being key -- but I was rather correcting my earlier note where I wrongly said that iPhotos is not on my list of purchased apps. Plus my intention in referring to that tread was only to say "this is my dilemma", not at all to reject your suggestion. Sorry.

(Note to self: read all new responses before responding with new or follow-up info.)
